The Department for the Study of Culture, University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral position in contemporary anglophone literature. The postdoc will conduct an individual research project focused on the relationship between global literature in English and contemporary theorizations of gendered work.

In recent years, theorists have frequently described global labour conditions as “feminized”, meaning that the experiences and practices once primarily associated with women workers are becoming the standard for the labour market in general. This postdoc project will explore the contribution that literature can make to an understanding of gender and work today by placing contemporary literary texts from the English-speaking world into dialogue with current theoretical perspectives (such as Social Reproduction Theory, theories of care or feminist anti-work critique). At least some of the literary texts to be discussed in the postdoc project should come from contexts other than the US or UK.

The postdoc will join the research project Feminized: A New Literary History of Women’s Work, funded by the Carlsberg Foundation https://www.carlsbergfondet.dk/en/Forskningsaktiviteter/Bevillingsstatistik/Bevillingsoversigt/CF20_0554_Emily-J-Hogg.The goal of the research project is to explore how aesthetic and thematic engagements with conventional forms of women’s work in anglophone literature contribute to the understanding of a major trend in contemporary global labour markets: the feminization of work. The Feminized project is based within the larger Uses of Literature group (https://www.SDU.dk/en/uol) an established international and interdisciplinary research environment with a strong track-record in generating innovative research on literature’s social dimensions that is published by leading venues.

Applicants should:

  • outline an individual research plan, including a plan for dissemination
  • have a PhD in literary or cultural studies
  • be able to demonstrate expertise in the study of contemporary literature/culture
  • demonstrate knowledge of relevant theoretical frameworks
  • have the ability to publish with international journals/presses in the field
  • have a high level of academic English. The working language of the project is English.
  • Be interested in collaboration and teamwork. As well as conducting his/her own research project, the postdoc will be expected to contribute to seminars and workshops organized by the project.

Further information is available from the Head of Department Per Krogh Hansen at phone: 65501451, email [email protected] or Associate Professor Emily Hogg at phone: 65507706, email [email protected].
