The SDU Center for Nano Optics (www.SDU.dk/nano-optics) at the University of Southern Denmark (Odense Campus) invites applications for a PhD fellowship within the research areas of quantum and nonlinear nano-optics. The application deadline is December 5, 2021, and the prospective starting date is between January and April 2022.
SDU Center for Nano Optics (CNO) is a center of excellence with cutting-edge fundamental research activities in plasmonics and metasurfaces. Within the CNO, Assistant Prof. Joel D. Cox has established a group focusing on quantum and nonlinear nano-optics that theoretically explores nanoscale light-matter interactions at the interface of classical electrodynamics and quantum physics, with extreme spatial confinement of both light fields and matter driving nonlinear optical phenomena in low-dimensional and atomic systems. For more information, please consult recent perspective papers (DOI: 10.1021/acs.accounts.9b00308 and DOI: 10.1002/adom.201901473).
The CNO has world-class nano optics and quantum optics labs, and access to state-of-the-art nanofabrication and novel electron spectroscopy. In addition to local support, the center is backed by prestigious grants from Independent Research Fund Denmark (Sapere Aude grant), the European Research Council (ERC Advanced Grant), and VILLUM FONDEN (Villum Investigator grant). Prof. Joel D. Cox, along with the CNO PIs Prof. N. Asger Mortensen and Prof. Bozhevolnyi, are also affiliated with the Danish Institute for Advanced Study (https://danish-ias.dk/), a national elite center at SDU that aims to inspire ground-breaking ideas by bringing together outstanding international researchers working in all disciplines.
The PhD opening concerns a fully funded three-year PhD fellowship.
We seek candidates possessing strong qualifications in theory, with a solid background in condensed-matter physics, quantum optics, nanophotonics, or related areas. The successful candidates will contribute to frontier research in areas where potentially both light and matter exhibit quantum mechanical behavior. Theory projects will benefit from techniques ranging from semiclassical to quantum-field theory, potentially also including time-dependent ab-initio approaches to account for material properties. Material platforms range from noble metals to 2D materials and artificial quantum emitters such as quantum dots and defect centers in nanocrystals.
Applicants for PhD positions must hold a MSc degree in physics, electrical engineering, or similar (equivalent to a Danish master's degree). Candidates should motivate their application in a cover letter. The application should also clearly state if there has been any preliminary contact/discussion with the one of the below contact persons.
The filling of positions is supported by the Sapere Aude program awarded by Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) to the principal investigator. For more information, see https://dff.dk/forskningsprojekter/forskningsleder/sapere-aude-forskningsledere-2020/joel-cox.
For more information on possibilities for PhD projects, please contact:
DIAS Assistant Professor & Sapere Aude Research Leader Joel D. Cox (e-mail: [email protected]),
Professor & Villum Investigator N. Asger Mortensen (email: [email protected])
If you experience technical problems you must contact [email protected].
Conditions of employment
Applicants are required to have a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position (start salary amounts to approx. 3.378,- EURO per month incl. supplements).
Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the Head of the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission to the PhD school. Employment and enrollment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.
A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.
Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.
The successful candidate will be enrolled at SDU in accordance with Faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order), read more here.
