Several two-year postdoc positions, with possibility of extension, are available in the research group of Algorithmic Cheminformatics at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). The positions are in an exciting six-year project supported by the Challenge Programme of the Novo Nordisk Foundation: “Mathematical Modelling for Microbial Community Induced Metabolic Diseases”, led by Professor Daniel Merkle. The starting date is 1 March 2022 or as soon thereafter as possible for the applicant. Application deadline: 20 January 2022.
We are seeking highly motivated individuals with a PhD in computer science, computational chemistry / biochemistry, applied mathematics, or related areas. The ideal candidate has familiarity with several of the following areas: algorithmics, mathematical modelling, graph transformation, algorithm engineering. Applications of these areas to systems chemistry, systems biology, metabolic networks, or microbial communities is an advantage, but not a must. Solid competences in programming and ease with formal thinking are prerequisites.
The project is based on the novel application of formalisms, algorithms, and computational methods from computer science to the design of microbial communities, for use in health science. We aim to expand these methods and their formal foundations, create efficient algorithms and implementations of them, and use these implementations for research in understanding the functionality and stability of intestinal microbial communities. See MATOMIC for more details.
The research group in Algorithmic Cheminformatics at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at SDU offers a dynamic research environment, comprising two full professors, an associate professor, and several postdocs and students. The project includes strong partnerships with the University of Leipzig (Bioinformatics, Professor Peter Stadler), the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Leipzig (Molecular Systems Biology, Professor Martin von Bergen) and the University of Vienna (Department of Theoretical Chemistry, Professor Christoph Flamm), who may potentially host the postdoctoral researcher for extended visits.
The research group is located at the main campus of SDU, which is located in Odense, the third largest city in Denmark. Denmark is known for its high standards of living, free health care, and competitive salaries. Applicants from outside Denmark are eligible for substantial tax reductions. Please check links below for more information.
For further information contact Professor Daniel Merkle (e-mail: [email protected], phone: +45 6550 2322).
Application, salary etc.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.
The application must include the following:
• A curriculum vitae including information on previous employment.
• A full list of publications stating the scientific publications on which the applicant wishes to rely.
Shortlisting may be used in the assessment process.
Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.
To qualify you must have passed a PhD or equivalent. Applications will be assessed by an expert assessor/committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the university.
The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
Applications must be submitted electronically using the link "Apply online". Attached files must be in Adobe PDF or Word format. Each box can only contain a single file of max. 10 Mb. We strongly recommend that you read How to apply before you apply.
