SDU Biotechnology section at Department of Green Technology, Faculty of Engineering, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for one 2-year post doc position in Microbial Biotechnology. The position is funded by a Danish Funding source and framed withing the sustainable development goal of good health and well-being. The project aims to understand infectious diseases affecting livestock and find alternative solutions to provide safer animal-based food with a One Health approach. The post doc position is available from 1st of August 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project concerns the study of bacterial zoonotic diseases that are relevant for the global Public Health program. We want to put special focus on providing safer food and/or understand and prevent the infection of animals withing the farms and thus reducing the amount of antibiotics usage. The study involves selections of critical pathogens with special target on Enterobacteriaceae infections and a wide range of methodological approaches within basic and applied sciences. Once selected the main system the candidate will develop a novel proof-of-concept aiming to reduce one or more of the following mechanisms: bacteria proliferation, colonization, infection and/or AMR. The project has high flexibility depending on the results obtained during the system conceptualization, so we welcome innovative and creative ideas and a collaborative mindset.

The successful applicant for the post doc position should have:

  • PhD in microbiology, veterinary and medical sciences, biological sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, or a related specialization.
  • The ideal candidate for the position already has experience in at least three or more of the following subjects:
    • Advance microbiological techniques regarding culture, isolation, identification, AST, MIC, etc.
    • Molecular biology: qPCR, sequencing, in-situ hybridization, and western blot, among others.
    • Cell biology: cell cultures, bacteria transformation, immunostainings.
    • Bioimaging and analysis of fluorescence microscopy images.
    • Biotechnology: nano particles, diagnostic test, spectroscopy.
    • Experienced with animal models is a plus but not exclusive.

  • Relevant knowledge in the following areas is desired:
    • Zoonotic diseases related to bacterial infections and food-borne diseases. One health approach: animal-human-environment understanding
    • Epidemiology and Public Health, advance statistics
    • Clinical microbiology is desired but not exclusive.


The candidate must expect to be working with all of these areas during the post doc project and will get the sufficient training in the subjects that he or she is not familiar with.

Conditions of employment
The post doc position is a 2-years position.
Employment as a postdoc requires scientific qualifications at PhD level. Employment as a postdoc is temporary and will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

Research will be predominant in the position. Teaching assignments can be agreed individually. Furthermore, other types of assignments may occur to a limited degree. The Faculty determines the distribution of the various assignments. The weighting of the different assignments may vary over time. The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
