The Data Science and Statistics Group, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMADA) at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellowship position within the field of statistical learning theory to be filled as soon as possible, earliest by 1 April 2023 and latest anytime within 2023, for a period of two years. Application deadline: 1 March 2023.

The research project aims to develop novel probabilistic approaches to model-based reinforcement learning to improve their sample efficiency. The project will search for major contributions to the field of approximate Bayesian inference of dynamical systems with application to reinforcement learning. The details of the topic scope will be tuned in collaboration with the successful candidate. The project is funded by a prestigious domestic grant.

IMADA has the unique feature of bringing mathematicians and computer scientists together within a single department to foster theoretically-supported data science research. IMADA is home to many ongoing externally funded research projects, as well as to a rich curriculum of data science courses. Data Science and Statistics Group is a synergy platform for the data science experts at IMADA.

We are seeking candidates with a PhD degree earned via a world-class research output in probabilistic machine learning theory or reinforcement learning theory documented by first-author publications at tier-1 level fundamental machine learning research venues including ICML, NeurIPS, UAI, AISTATS, ICLR, AAAI, IJCAI, JMLR, PAMI, etc.. From the candidates we expect excellent scientific writing skills in English. The successful candidate will participate in research projects and assist in student supervision.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is located at the main campus of the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark.
The University of Southern Denmark was founded in 1966 and now has more than 27,000 students, almost 20% of whom are from abroad. It has more than 3,800 employees, and 115 different study programmes in the fields of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences, and engineering. Its main campus is located in Odense, the third largest city in Denmark.
