The Department of Economics, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, invites applications for one or more vacant positions as Associate Professor in Economics to be filled 1. September 2023 or soon thereafter.

Job description

The Department of Economics is an international department with a strong tradition for excellence in research and teaching within the various areas of economics. The research, teaching, and dissemination activities at the department are organized within four groups: Econometrics and Data Science; Economic History; Macroeconomics; and Microeconomics. The Associate Professor will be affiliated with one of the four research groups, and we are in particular looking for competences within Microeconomics or Applied Economics. It is the aim of the department to conduct research of the highest international standard documented through

  1. publications in internationally distinguished journals,
  2. presentations at international conferences,
  3. external funding from competitive programs,
  4. dissemination with high visibility and broad societal impact.

The department emphasizes high-quality research-based teaching using the most relevant teaching methods to enhance students' learning and the department explicit articulate our view on studying economics at SDU, which can be read here.

The department is responsible for the undergraduate as well as the graduate programmes in Economics and Mathematics-Economics at campus Odense. Also, the department is responsible for economics courses at different campuses at the University of Southern Denmark with activities in Odense, Sønderborg, and Slagelse. The research activities (and the workplace) are situated in Odense but teaching activities in Sønderborg and Slagelse is part of the job.

The successful applicant is expected to

  • have a PhD in economics or a related field,
  • have research publications published in highly reputed international academic journals and a coherent research pipeline,
  • have extensive experience in teaching and supervision at bachelor/master levels and experience with course design,
  • have experience with external research fundraising and application processes,
  • have an interest and ability in impacting society by knowledge exchange,
  • possess excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain good working relationships.

Applicants are expected to

  • undertake high-quality teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate (PhD) levels in courses related to microeconomics, econometrics, and/or related fields,
  • supervise undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students,
  • conduct high-quality research that leads to publications in highly reputed international academic journals,
  • take responsibility for program and curriculum development,
  • strengthen the department's development in research, teaching, and dissemination,
  • perform academic, knowledge dissemination, and administrative tasks.

It is important for the department that applicants have good interpersonal skills and are dedicated to take part in the daily academic and social interaction of the research groups and at the department.

In general, the department values a diversity of competences and academic profiles, and thus applicants must present a clear academic profile. By academic profile is understood the combined quality of research, teaching, and societal impact.

Appointment to the position requires a PhD or equivalent and will be in accordance with the salary agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

  • Complete list of publications, indicating which publications are most relevant for the position
  • Up to 5 of the most relevant publications. Please upload a pdf for each publication, if the publication has been co-authored, co-author statements are encouraged to be a part of this pdf,
  • A research plan detailing the candidate's idea and plans for her/his future research also reflecting upon how to integrate external funding in the research agenda

All non-Danish documents must be translated into English.

Assessment of applications will be done under existing Appointment Order for universities. Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee. The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material.

When the assessment committee has submitted its report, the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her.

Applications that are incomplete with regards to the above requirements will not be assessed by the committee. Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process.
