The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy at SDU invites applicants for a postdoc position in theoretical/computational chemistry. Application deadline: 31 July 2023.

The research team led by Erik Hedegård at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy, SDU, (Odense) invites applications for a postdoc position.

Projects can be focused in three directions: (i) Applying quantum-mechanical methods to understand the light-activation of metal complexes used in light-activated chemotherapy. (ii) Applying quantum-mechanical/ classical hybrids (QM/MM) to uncover the mechanism of bio-inorganic catalysts for C–H activation. (iii) Development of quantum chemical methods for transition metals. The latter will be with a particular focus on methods for larger systems, e.g. proteins, enzymes, condensed phases, and materials.

We are looking for outstanding and highly-motivated candidates with a PhD degree in chemistry (or equivalent), preferably with a specialization in physical and theoretical chemistry. The candidate will join a dynamic and curiosity-driven research group and is expected to work collaboratively with other research teams (both at the department and internationally). Experience in programming is an advantage.

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy offers a stimulating research environment, with research topics, ranging from drug-discovery, bio-inorganic and bio-organic synthetic chemistry to material science.

The appointment will be for one year. The exact starting date is flexible, but expected around Autumn 2023 (earliest 1 August 2023, latest December 2023). Funding for travel to conferences, workshops and summer schools is available.

The postdoc's duties will include research, but may also include teaching.

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy is one of four departments at the Faculty of Science, SDU and is located in Odense. The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy is a department focused on basic research. We are happy to move beyond traditional disciplines and work to develop new technologies and sciences across physics, chemistry, pharmacy, mathematics, computer science and biology. The department’s research thus contributes to new knowledge and solutions with applications in the areas of climate, environment, energy and health.

The department handles research in chemistry, physics and pharmacy along with several interdisciplinary areas, and also houses several major research centres. The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy is responsible for the educations in chemistry, medicinal chemistry and physics, as well as the bachelor’s education in pharmacy.

The postdoc position is placed in the Section for Chemistry and Pharmacy and the successful candidate will work in a highly collaborative atmosphere with theorists and experimental scientists.

Prospective candidates are required to include at least two letters of recommendation along with a motivation letter (one page) in their application.

For any further questions please contact: Erik Hedegård [email protected].
