The Research Unit of Movement, Culture and Society (MoCS) at the Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics, located at the University of Southern Denmark campus in Odense, invites applications for a 2-year position as postdoc starting in January 2024.

The position and the project

The postdoc position is connected to the project ‘Transforming illness experience through a co-creative dance practice for young cancer survivors: A pilot study’ (2024-2025).The project investigates the impact and potential of creative dance practices in the rehabilitation of young cancer survivors in Denmark. The project is based on qualitative research methods, primarily ethnographic data-gathering techniques, and uses embodied, narrative, and performative approaches and video-graphic documentation in ongoing analysis and discussions.

The successful candidate will be expected to work in close collaboration with Dr. Sarah Pini, principal investigator of the project, to develop and implement a co-creative dance-based rehabilitative intervention for young cancer survivors in Odense and Aarhus, in collaboration with professor Mette Terp Høybye at Aarhus University (co-PI) and dance artist Marie Hallager Andersen.

The candidate will be expected to take responsibility for conducting ethnographic fieldwork during the intervention and to contribute to the data collection, analysis, dissemination and publication of the results in collaboration with the research team. The candidate will also be expected to participate and contribute to the life of the Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics and to initiatives and activities of the Research Unit of Movement, Culture and Society (MoCS) with attendance in meetings, seminars and other departmental events.

The project takes place in Denmark. We are therefore looking for a candidate able to handle fieldwork, including participant observation, ethnographic interviews, video diaries and recordings in Danish.

Research environment

MoCS’ research activities span across the humanities and social sciences. MoCS investigates embodied experiences and movement practices in sports, health and performing arts as they are shaped by socio-cultural contexts. The researchers in the unit draw on approaches developed in the humanities and social sciences, especially phenomenology, ethnography and cultural analysis.

MoCS covers a diverse array of topics, such as cultural practices among elite and amateur athletes and dancers, skilled practices in lifestyle sports, the nature of musical expertise and embodied experiences in illness and disability. Staff-members are part of several international research networks in the fields of phenomenology, sports philosophy, cultural analysis, anthropology and sociology.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD-degree with relevance for qualitative health research. We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

  • A background in ethnographic research, cultural and medical anthropology, sociology or related fields
  • Documented research experience related to the broad area of qualitative health research, medical anthropology, cancer survivorship and rehabilitation and arts and health.

Applicants with an interest in and documented experience from any or all the following criteria will be prioritized:

  • Critical social or cultural analytical approaches to creative movement practices
  • The handling of interdisciplinary challenges of using ethnographic and practice-based research methods
  • Experience as for using visual methods in research, e.g. the use of film and photography
  • Documented experience as to publishing in international journals

Employment

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). An evaluation will be performed 3 months after employment.
