The Department of Technology and Innovation (ITI) at the Faculty of Engineering (TEK) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher in Urban Resilience within the UNESCO Chair on Urban Resilience (SDU.Resilience) at the Section for Civil and Architectural Engineering (CAE). The postdoc is a 3-year position and is available from 15. September 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.

We are looking for a highly motivated and qualified candidate to support our research on aquatic Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for climate change adaptation and mitigation, particularly with a spatial planning focus.

Research environmentSDU.Resilience is an expanding research team coordinated by Professor WSR on Urban Resilience Nicola Tollin, conducting transdisciplinary research, education and knowledge transfer activities on urban resilience at the international level, with a strong network of academic and inter-governmental organizations partners worldwide.

SDU.Resilience investigates urban resilient transition, addressing systemically the causes and effects of climate change in cities, including climate change adaptation and mitigation, and other related major urban challenges: urbanization, pandemics and disaster risk reduction, in the wider frame of sustainable development.

Our research aims at informing and supporting policymaking at international and national level, and science-based urban planning and design for local action, both in the Global North and South.

SDU.Resilience specific knowledge areas include:

  • Climate Change Governance
  • Human Health and Climate
  • Water and Human Settlements
  • Circular Economy and Built Environment
  • Capacity Building for Climate Action
  • Coastal and Maritime Planning

Work EnvironmentWe offer an inclusive, international and interdisciplinary working environment with strong international collaborations. Our ambition is to recruit, develop and retain talented researchers committed to academic and professional excellence and the development of the research group and the department.

Duties and responsibilitiesThe post-holder will contribute to further develop and expand research, education and knowledge transfer activities across the SDU.Resilience knowledge areas, with a specific focus on Aquatic Nature-Based Solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

The candidate will join an international team of researchers and be involved in a prestigious research project under the Elite Centre of Aquatic Nature-based Solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation (Aqua-NbS). The centre aims to scale up and integrate approaches of Aquatic Nature-based Solutions to expand the provision of multiple ecosystem services, including carbon storage, climate regulation, water filtration, coastal protection, and food-web support. The work includes cross-disciplinary approaches that span the full land-sea continuum and incorporate a comprehensive range of technological, institutional, and socio-economic settings. Aqua-NbS will investigate aquatic habitats and their valuable ecosystem services to craft inclusive, detailed guidelines on cost-effective opportunities and address the challenges in upscaling aquatic NbS. Experience in climate change adaptation and mitigation in coastal and marine domains, spatial planning and design, ecosystem services, and advanced skills on GIS (ArcGIS, Q-GIS) satellite and drone data acquisition and analysis, are especially welcome profiles.

Specific duties and responsibility of the Post Doc include to:

  • Conduct research on aquatic NBS in the frame of urban resilience;
  • Publish research outcomes in high-quality scientific journals;
