A professor position within Energy Materials and Devices is vacant at the Mads Clausen Institute, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) with starting date 1. April 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Mads Clausen Institute has a more than 20 years history as a modern and international institute with students and employees from all parts of the world. It is situated in both Odense and Sønderborg and hosts at present the research centres SDU NanoSYD, SDU Nano Optics and SDU Photonics Engineering, as well as the instrument centre C:MAC. The university has very close and historically grown bonds to its industrial environment, the surrounding municipalities and the region of Southern Denmark.

Within UNs sustainable development goals, the Mads Clausen Institute has a strong strategic focus on novel materials and devices, including thin film photovoltaics and energy storage devices, which encompass thin film synthesis, device integration and upscaling from novel Roll-to-Roll based technologies.

With the new professor position we wish to further strengthen and lead both research, teaching and innovation activities within these areas. In order to enter a leading position, a new centre will be inaugurated in April, Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics and Energy, CAPE. It is expected that the new professor will lead this centre.

The professor will thus be in charge of stimulating extensive research and publication activities and he or she will be responsible for courses within relevant teaching programs on both undergraduate, graduate and PhD level. The professor will also supervise corresponding students as well as postdoctoral researchers.

The ideal candidate has a proven ability to publish at an internationally high level, as well as the ability to attract significant research funding at both national and international level, including industrial development projects. The candidate also has documented experience in leading international research projects, is internationally known and recognized within her/his respective fields. Management experience via leadership of groups of strong researchers is also expected.

The candidate’s research plan must contain a clear vision for further strengthening the energy materials and device activities at the Mads Clausen Institute at SDU. This includes a plan for combining state-of-the-art research with innovation activities that include the Roll-to-Roll facility at MCI, SDU for device up-scaling. The candidate is expected to have plans for how to take advantage of the infrastructure at MCI in order to significantly expand consulting and commercialization activities with local and global companies, including plans for potential spin out activities if relevant.

Requirements and qualifications

  • PhD degree in engineering or physics.
  • Documented teaching experience in engineering and/or physics curricula corresponding to at least an associate professorship level.
  • Documented experience in obtaining strong research and development funding.
  • Documented experience in innovation activities and industrial collaborations.
  • Successful research and development dissemination in international scientific journals and conferences.
  • Documented experience in leading successful teams of researchers.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.

Fulfillment of most of the following qualifications is preferred

  • Expertise in nanoscience.
  • Expertise in nano- and thin film technology.
  • Expertise in upscaling of nanomaterials.
  • Expertise in device development.
  • Expertise in development of organic solar cells.

Conditions of employment
The candidate should have a PhD degree within the mentioned research area.
