ABOUT SEABORG

At Seaborg Technologies we are developing and bringing to market an advanced and innovative molten salt reactor technology to provide safe and sustainable nuclear energy to the world. We are working closely with regulators, shipyards, and the nuclear industry to produce floating advanced nuclear power plants by 2025 and have grown to become the leading molten salt reactor company outside of North America with an international team of more than 30 employees from five continents.

Our success is entirely due to our brilliant and passionate team of employees and experienced advisers - a team we are currently in the process of expanding with more world-class talent to achieve global impact.

THE ROLE

Seaborg Technologies is hiring several exceptional Design Engineers. As our design engineer, you will be responsible for the design of Systems, Structures and Components (SSCs) used in the CMSR and associated experiments and prototypes. The position will form an integral part of the Mechanical Engineering Group under the Engineering department and will interface and collaborate with teams of analysts, engineers and chemists, both internally and externally at technical partners, sub-suppliers and regulatory stakeholders.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for design and configuration management at the system, subsystem and component level.

  • Consult other designers, project leads, thermohydraulic and structural analysts, and other team members to refine designs into viable systems, structures and components.

  • Prepare design solutions that meet specific requirements, specifications, and be manufacturable.

  • Meet design requirements of the CMSR and associated tests and experiments.

  • Represent Seaborg in contact with external stakeholders, including sub-suppliers, technical partners and regulatory authorities.

TASKS

  • Convert engineering requirements into three-dimensional models, using SolidWorks CAD.

  • Use SolidWorks Simulation and Flow Simulation to conduct preliminary design analysis.

  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis to understand critical interface clearance and inform manufacturing and assembly alternatives.

  • Consult and develop a relationship with manufacturers of designs and prototypes.

  • Generate general assembly drawings, detailed parts drawings fully dimensioned with GD&T for design and manufacturing stages.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.

  • At least 3 years of experience using CAD to design parts/assemblies.

  • Experience working with fluid systems.

  • Experience using Finite element analysis (FEA).

  • Familiarity with high strength, corrosion resistant materials for use in high temperature environments.

  • Familiarity with manufacturing capabilities (typical tolerances) and processes: turning, milling, drilling, reaming, grinding, brazing, and welding.

  • Familiarity with mechanical metallic seals and threaded fasteners.

  • Basic understanding of NDT techniques and how to design SSC for ease of inspection.

  • Fundamental understanding of and ability to implement GD&T.

  • Ability to do hand calculations to roughly size structural elements of a design.

  • Ability to pre-size components using FEM and FVM analysis.

DESIRED COMPETENCIES

  • Experience in the nuclear industry and with nuclear-grade materials.

  • Familiarity with high temperature fluid systems and typical fittings for nuclear industry, and applicable standards, such as ASME BPVC Section III, Division 5.

  • Experience managing projects with external team members.

  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, structures and components from the nuclear industry.

  • Proficiency with SolidWorks CAD, and SolidWorks PDM.

QUALITIES

We are looking for a finisher with strong attention to detail. The ideal candidate must be able to creatively approach design challenges, but also remain motivated over multiple iterations of the same design. Seaborg is a fast-growing team, so we need someone who can pick up new skills independently and proactively solve tasks, overcome challenges and identify future potential issues. We expect someone who can multi-task and get involved in multiple projects. We provide a flexible environment, and so we expect the responsibility that comes with it.
