Background
DRC is a non-profit organisation that works worldwide to help and protect refugees, internally displaced and other conflict-affected persons. DRC’s communications and fundraising department is looking for an intern who will have a main focus on supporting the communication about Danish Demining Group (DDG), the Humanitarian Mine Action and Armed Violence Reduction unit of DRC.
The DDG mission is to create a safe environment where people can live free from armed violence and remnants of conflict. DDG strives to achieve this through Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) activities, focusing on landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW), as well as Armed Violence Reduction (AVR) programmes. The AVR component of our programming addresses both physical and psycho-social aspects of the threats posed by small arms and ERW. DDG’s work is vital in helping refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs) and other communities return to their homes when the conflict has ended, allowing them to make use of the land they were forced to leave behind and facilitating development.
Overall objective
The intern will be based in DRC’s communications department and have a close cooperation with our colleagues in DDG. Hence the intern will get the opportunity to become acquainted with the work within an international NGO and how to communicate about it. The intern will be given the possibility to work independently with different tasks that are related to his/her line of study and s/he will participate in a three weeks induction where s/he will be given the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the different units within DRC’s International Department, with a specific focus on the DDG unit.
DDG offers the intern the opportunity:
- To gain experience working at an international NGO;
- To work independently with different tasks related to communications, fundraising, information and quality management, and other tasks relevant to the intern’s profile;
- To be a part of a dynamic team.
The intern will be supporting his/her colleagues while gaining valuable working experience.

- Be enlisted at a university for a relevant education at master’s level (this is a prerequisite for the internship);
- Be fluent in both written and spoken English;
- Be effective in the use of MS Office;
- Have good interpersonal and communication skills;
- Be able to work independently as well as in a team;
- Be able to work systematically with a good structure for the tasks that you are responsible for;
- Have an eye for detail and strive to get the job done.
Qualifications
The intern will be working alongside other DRC and DDG colleagues on matters concerning communications, branding (visibility) and fundraising.
The intern is expected to:
- Communicate with DDG field offices to gather stories, interviews and photographs to be used for communicating DDG’s work
- Collect and proofread field (human interest) stories provided by the country programs;
- Assist with input for press releases that contain important updates about DDG’s projects and programmes;
- In cooperation with our colleagues from DDG, manage DDG’s Facebook site and further develop media outlets that will help increase the visibility of DDG;
- Contribute to the production of the existing internal and external media outlets such as internal and donor newsletters, factsheets, pamphlets etc.;
- Update the content on DDG’s website based on information provided by the country programs;
- Assist with preparation, formatting and proofreading of documents and correspondence ranging from different publications to project proposals;
- Help organise meetings and appointments as well as produce and distribute minutes of meetings.
The student should be pursuing a graduate level degree in Development Studies, Political Science, International Relations or other related social science studies. Students with experience in journalism, social media or other communication experience will have an advantage. Knowledge/experience with Adobe Photoshop or Umbraco would be preferred.
