The Biotech Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC), University of Copenhagen is looking for a colleague for pre-award grant management and research support. Do you have a scientific background and perhaps also experience with research evaluation, research governance or project management from a national or international research environment? Then you may be the colleague we are looking for. We offer a job working closely with BRIC’s researchers and management team, collaborations in and outside of Denmark and good possibilities to develop professionally.

The centre
BRIC is a research centre of excellence, focusing on disease-oriented biomedical research and is part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. BRIC hosts 22 independent research groups that perform basic and translational research aimed to understand diseases such as cancer, neurological and metabolic disorders. We also count eight core-facilities and a locally placed administration and research support team. We offer a workplace with ambitious goals and an international, diverse and open work environment.

The role
We are seeking a colleague to join BRIC’s Strategic Research Support team. The core of the position is within BRIC’s well-developed pre-award grant support. This involves close interactions and collaboration with BRIC’s researchers to match them with potential funding sources and help them develop competitive grant applications. Also, the role will include supporting processes related to research evaluations, strategy development and management support. Onwards, the position may include project management of a larger externally funded project in collaboration with one of BRIC’s group leaders.

The role of professional research managers and administrators are becoming increasingly acknowledged and besides side-by-side training at BRIC, training opportunities for the role is available through a number of national and international organisations (e.g. DARMA and EARMA).

The primary responsibilities include:

Grant support:

  • Perform pre-award grant support, including coordination of peer reviews and giving application feedback.
  • Give strategic advice to our group leaders and postdocs on national and international funding opportunities.
  • Help develop larger applications for the European Research Council, the Innovation Foundation Denmark, the National Research Foundation etc.
  • Co-develop new applications to EU with focus on the Marie S. Curie programme (partner matchmaking, write specific sections, help illustrate the applications etc.).
  • Potentially organise grant writing workshops for postdocs.
  • Represent BRIC in the grants working group in the EU-LIFE alliance counting 15 top European research institutes (traveling for meetings a few times per year is expected).

Research evaluations, strategy development and management support:

  • Develop and coordinate center and researcher evaluation processes (tenure evaluations, Scientific Advisory Board evaluations etc.)
  • Engage in strategy development, including exploring potential external collaborations and driving development of goal and action plans.
  • Perform leadership support of BRIC’s management team in areas related to research and innovation, hereunder prepare analyses and smaller reports.

Potential future tasks may include post-award project management of larger national or international projects (Horizon Europe, Innovation Foundation Denmark, National Research Foundation ), organizing project events, ensure timely reporting, oversee science-related aspects such as Open Science, ethics, data management etc, manage content of the project websites and ensuring communication of project results to relevant stakeholders and the general public.

The Strategic Research Support office
You will be part of BRIC’s Strategic Research Support office. We are a diverse team with a broad portfolio of tasks, supporting BRIC’s overall strategy. You will work both independently with own responsibility areas and as part of the whole team to solve cross-going activities. On a daily basis, we work in three sub-teams with three main responsibility areas: Communication (2 communications officers) Grant support (two scientific officers), and PhD training programmes (2 PhD coordinators). Across the team, we act as project managers of externally funded national and international projects and represent BRIC in working groups in the EU-LIFE alliance.

We have an informal and open team environment, and you will have the opportunity to develop own ideas/co-create ideas in the team. We often work with fixed deadlines and therefore run fast in periods, balanced by more quiet periods.

Your profile
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic colleague with a good understanding of biomedical research and with the following experience and competences:

Professional experiences:

  • Preferably PhD degree in biomedical research or related fields.
  • Research experience at e.g. postdoc level from an international environment.
  • Experience with attraction of competitive funding, either personally or in a support position.
  • Experience with establishing and managing collaborations, partnerships, or consortia.
  • Experience in project management of European or other international grants and/or in organizing scientific meetings, training events, or alike is desirable.

Competences:

  • Analytical, proactive and with a problem-solving attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written as well as verbal) and an ability to explain complex concepts in simple and convincing terms.
  • Well-organized with both a helicopter perspective and attention to detail.
  • Service-minded, open and able to build trust.
  • Good team player, who actively engages in building collegial relationships across the organisation (admin colleagues, research group leaders, early career researchers etc.).
  • Competences in Office 365 and the ability to learn new administrative support systems.

Furthermore, to be successful in the position, it is crucial that you have a good organisational understanding and can work with different stakeholders.

Salary and terms of employment
Depending on your experience level and qualifications, you will be permanently employed as an Academic officer/Fuldmægtig or Special advisor/Specialkonsulent in accordance with the Circular on the Collective Agreement concerning academics in the state sector concluded between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Salary according to experience level. There will be the possibility of negotiation of supplementary qualifications. The weekly working time is 37 hours. Expected start of position is January 1, 2024.
