Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Section for Plant Glycobiology at SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen is offering a position as laboratory technicianfrom August 1st 2020 until 30th April 2027.

About us:

The department is one of the largest at Copenhagen University with approx. 550 employees; covering PhD's to Professors, plus administration. We have nine research sections, which each have their own research focus. Our section, the Plant Glycobiology section, is focused on glycobiology - plant cell walls and starch. This includes both fundamental and applied research aspects. The section undertakes research and teaching related to plant and algal glycobiology with particular focus on cell walls, protein glycosylation, vesicle trafficking, starch and carbohydrate-active enzymes. We have a particular focus on algal evolution and diversity, including the origins of land plants, the impacts of climate change and aquatic primary producers and exploring the vast, and largely unexploited, diversity of microalgae for potential novel compounds of applied interest. The whole section has bi-weekly section meetings with general information and sharing of research. The sections are divided into research groups - with their own specific topic.

The research group of Staffan Persson will undertake research in the areas of cell wall synthesis in Arabidopsis, Marchantia (a bryophyte) and rice. The group is mainly interested in how plants make cellulose and need research support in the areas of molecular & cell biology, biochemistry and analytical chemistry. More specifically, the group aims to understand how the proteins that produce cellulose are regulated and trafficked in the cell, what other proteins partake in cellulose production and how we can engineer plants to change their cellulose-producing capacity. The group will consist of an inter-disciplinary mix of biophysicists, chemists, molecular & cell biologists and biochemists.

Tasks:

You will be affiliated with the Persson laboratory located in the Plant Glycobiology section as of August 1st, 2020. You will oversee many tasks and responsibilities associated with lab maintenance and daily work, such as aiding researchers in their work, maintaining an organized lab environment and oversee consumables and equipment.

Your task will include:

  • Assisting in general lab tasks, such as preparation of solutions and media
  • Aid in experiments related to specific research projects, including cloning work, protein purification and extraction, and cell wall preparations
  • Maintaining plant growth and cell suspensions
  • Establishing and implementation of policies and procedures

We expect:

  • Education as laboratory technician
  • Experience in one or more of the mentioned areas
  • Can work independently as well as in teams
  • Service-minded and responsible
  • Evidence of training and supervision of students
  • Excellent communication skills – fluent in English and Danish

We offer:

You can expect to work in a highly dynamic, socially competent and cutting-edge research team. The lab will consist of about four to five postdocs, and a similar number of students, with diverse backgrounds and skillsets, supported by yourself and an additional Academic Research staff. Your work will be highly integrated with the postdocs and students and you will partake in regular lab meetings and other lab activities to become well integrated into the group. You will be part of the whole section with participation in teaching, collaboration and other activities.

Terms of salary and employment:
