Copenhagen Hepatitis C Program (CO-HEP)

Department of Immunology and Microbiology

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

University of Copenhagen

The University seeks to appoint an associate professor in Molecular virology and treatment of hepatic viruses to the Copenhagen Hepatitis C Program (CO-HEP), Department of Immunology and Microbiology to commence as soon as possible. The position is limited to 5 years and is a 20% position.

CO-HEP is a joint research program between Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen and Department of Infectious Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital, Hvidovre. It is thus preferred that the candidate holds a research position at Copenhagen University Hospital, Hvidovre.

Information on the Department can be found at: https://isim.ku.dk/.

Job description
In considering applications for the associate professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant´s ability to document a high level of original scientific work on an international level within the area of Molecular virology and treatment of hepatic viruses. Emphasis will be placed on fostering of local, national, and international collaborative studies that involve associated fields. Here, the synergy with translational research at Copenhagen University Hospital, Hvidovre, is of particular importance.

The field of study is virology with a special focus on original research within the areas of viral replication and innovative treatment options of hepatic viruses, in particular hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV), by merging classical cell culture assays with novel molecular biology techniques and advanced real-time fluorescent imaging, as well as relevant animal models.

For HBV, the position will include research focused on better understanding persistence and identifying novel molecular strategies for viral clearance, helping reduce the burden of this important human disease.

For HCV, the position will include research on the molecular details of HCV replication in host cells, with particular focus on genomic RNA recombination and trafficking during virion production. These aspects of the HCV life cycle are still poorly understood and would provide relevant information to understand the viral assembly and drug resistance mechanisms of HCV and related viruses.

Thus, it is expected that the candidate has a strong background in molecular and cell biology of viral infections using in vitro and in vivo systems, experience performing and evaluating drug resistance and susceptibility assays, and has ambitions to drive an innovative approach using state-of-the-art methodology to uncover novel mechanisms of viral infection. Experience with fluorescence microbiology, image analysis, and bioinformatics is highly desirable.

Academically, the candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching in the course of “Immunology and Microbiology” at the Human Biology master education and “Medical Microbiology” at the Medicine bachelor education. The candidate is furthermore expected to supervise and mentor bachelor, master, and Ph.D. students in relation to their research activities.

The associate professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments

Required qualifications
Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Find information about each criterion here: https://employment.ku.dk/faculty/criteria-for-recognising-merit.

Furthermore, each applicant must be able to document:

  • Research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an assistant professor/postdoc, but may also be obtained in other ways
  • Teaching qualifications and pedagogical competencies
  • Research-based teaching

The associate professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment
The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 5years.

The average weekly working hours are 7.4 hours per week.

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.
