Assistant/Associate Professor in Inorganic Chemistry

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy at SDU invites applications for a position as Assistant or Associate Professor in Inorganic Chemistry. The position is to be filled by 1 August 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy is one of four departments at the Faculty of Science, located at the main campus of SDU in Odense. The department’s fundamental research contributes to new knowledge and solutions with applications in the areas of climate, environment, energy, and health. The department is responsible for the educations in chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and physics, as well as the bachelor’s education in pharmacy. The assistant/associate professor will be part of the Section for Chemistry and Pharmacy.

Tasks:

  • Teach in our educational programs especially within all branches of inorganic chemistry including coordination, organometallic, bioinorganic and solid-state inorganic chemistry.
  • Establish an independent research program, preferably within one or more of the following areas, coordination chemistry, organometallic chemistry, bioinorganic/medicinal inorganic chemistry and catalysis or similar, and with consideration of support for our present research infrastructure.
  • Bioinorganic/medicinal inorganic chemistry and catalysis.
  • Obtain external funding for research independent and collaborative research programs.
  • Mentor undergraduate and research students.
  • Bridge-build between the various disciplines within the interdisciplinary department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy.
  • Initiate and participate in public, media and local school outreach activities.
  • Participate in the daily operation, administration and further development of the department’s strategy and education programs.

Skills:
A candidate with experience in synthesis and characterization employing the established in-house techniques is prioritized. These include single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, solid and liquid state NMR spectroscopy, Mass spectrometry, Electron Spin Resonance spectroscopy along with other routine spectroscopies and methods.
Ability to communicate clearly, and creativity in teaching.

The successful applicant is expected to have a Ph.D. and research background within experimental inorganic chemistry. Postdoctoral research experience is strongly preferred. Documented experience with teaching, outreach and/or the ability to attract external funding will be considered an advantage.

Educational requirements:
To gain promotion to associate professor a faculty member is expected to obtain external funding to support research activities and publish in high impact peer-reviewed journals from research performed at SDU. In addition to these criteria for research excellence, the Department expects the candidate to excel at teaching, as documented through teaching evaluations, and to serve on various committees.
