Job Description

Job Title: Director, Public Relations, Europe, Middle East & Africa
Location: Europe remote

What you will do:


The Director of Public Relations – based in Europe – joins a global team of communications professionals to deliver a simple-to-understand message about Thermo Fisher’s role in accelerating innovation and improving productivity in scientific laboratories around the world. This position will focus on developing the high-level messaging that increases awareness of such topics as Thermo Fisher’s effort to promote the growth of precision medicine, ensure the safety of the world’s food supply and protect communities from the scourge of illegal drugs.

Thermo Fisher in Europe and the region: Thermo Fisher has approximately 25,000 employees in Europe, the Middle East & Africa. With 150 sites in 30 countries, the region generates nearly 20 percent of the company’s revenue. Our largest concentration of employees in the region are in Germany, the UK and Italy. We have established Centers of Excellence in Vilnius (Lithuania), Brno (Czech Republic) and Eindhoven (Netherlands) that bring together manufacturing, commercial capabilities and R&D. Our EMEA presence includes Russia, Israel, United Arab Emirates, Norway and Switzerland.

Our Europe-based communications team and themes: The Director of Public Relations in EMEA will lead the company’s effort to leverage our industry-leading position to become better known throughout the region. This new position will be largely focused on Europe – primarily EU member states and the UK after Brexit – and will work closely with the head of EU government relations and other internal and external communications professionals.

This role will partner with communications professionals in our EMEA businesses as well as Europe-based functional leads from branding, marketing and event management to ensure alignment in messaging.

There are elements of our global strategy that can be localized and shared. These include:

  • Establishing a thought leadership platform which builds on our Mission of enabling our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. Globally, this has been interpreted as advancing precision medicine, ensuring air and water quality and protecting our communities.
  • Protecting our company’s reputation while managing through change – facility actions, crisis situations, mergers and acquisitions etc.
  • The growing importance of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria used in evaluating our reputation. We have made significant progress in measuring our performance in several key areas including:
    • Operational Integrity, Colleagues, Communities and Environment. Your role is to align our efforts with these key indicators and develop a plan to gain recognition for and promote our achievements among key audiences.



How you will make an impact:

Develop a strategic communications plan for the region to create high-level awareness among key audiences and combine earned, owned and paid media to position Thermo Fisher as one of the world’s most admired companies. Your key audiences include our customers, current and potential employees, and the leaders and residents of the communities where we live and work.
  • Support the communications team’s planning and execution of change management activities and lead crisis communications preparation and response.
  • Recommend the top priority media targets and messages, focusing our leaders and our efforts on the most impactful opportunities that balance media exposure with business growth.
  • Be the Europe PR voice and a trusted advisor to the vice president of corporate communications, the president of Thermo Fisher in EMEA and other company leaders in the region.
  • Build and nurture relationships with selected media outlets.
  • Develop, write and/or approve messaging for corporate and trade press releases and pitches; talking points and speeches for media interviews and public events; social media content; media statements, op-eds, letters to the editor, and similar content.
  • Position business and R&D leaders as subject matter experts.
  • Monitor media coverage and identify opportunities to participate in industry dialogue.
  • Organize media briefings and press conferences at trade shows and other public forums.
  • Organize and provide media training and coaching.
  • Identify, manage and work with PR firms in Europe and elsewhere.
  • Actively participate in committees and events with our trade associations including Business Europe, MedTech Europe, the British In Vitro Diagnostics Association, American Chambers of Commerce and other committees as assigned.


How you will get there:

  • Personal attachment to our Mission of enabling our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer;
  • A degree in public relations or journalism is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in communications, preferably in a publicly traded company;
  • Familiarity with social media trends and measurement platforms.
  • Strong business acumen and an ability to clearly communicate complicated issues in simple terms.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to think strategically; able to align company strengths and goals with PR opportunities and challenges leading to increased awareness and business growth.
  • Unquestionable commitment to business ethics and personal integrity.
  • Self-directed and self-motivated; ability to work under pressure with a positive attitude
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a highly-matrixed organization.
  • Fluent spoken and written English; proficiency in other languages such as German desired.
  • This role is expected to travel 30 percent, primarily in Europe, plus 1-2 trips to the U.S. per year.
