Title
Sustainability and Resilience Modeling of Complex Manufacturing Systems

Research area and project description
Distributed manufacturing networks present new opportunities for accelerating the transition to a sustainable and circular economy. However, any envisioned gains can be lost due to disruptions from unplanned events. Ongoing material supply and manufacturing challenges from disruptions caused by international conflicts, adverse climate events, and the COVID-19 pandemic, are stark reminders that resilience- and adaptation-agnostic planning of manufacturing systems can be detrimental towards global green transition. There is an urgent need for models that can accurately simulate the effect of disruptions on a manufacturing system’s sustainability and circularity performance, and support decision-makers in identifying resilience-oriented indicators that can maintain progress towards the set sustainability and circularity targets.

This PhD project aims to develop and validate simulation-driven frameworks for evaluating the sustainability, circularity, and resilience of manufacturing systems under unforeseen disruptions (e.g., supply chain shocks, equipment failure) to ensure that the system performance does not deteriorate significantly under non-optimal operation. The expected outcomes from the project, include conceptual and simulation models that enable re-planning and re-configuration of manufacturing processes and internal logistics flows from a resiliency and sustainability perspective. The developed methods and solutions will be validated in real-world contexts in collaboration with partnering manufacturing companies.

The PhD project is a part of the European project ACCURATE: Achieving Resilience Through Manufacturing as a Service, Digital Twins and Ecosystems which has received funding from the European Commission under the Horizon Europe Programme. The ACCURATE project aims to boost the competitiveness of European manufacturing companies and value chains by improving their sustainability, performance stability, resilience, and ability to manage unforeseen events.
