The project
The PhD project will be performed under the project INTERACT, which is part of the Collaborative Crop Resilience Program funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The project aims to understand thel ecology of microbial communities on wheat roots and decode important microbial interactions with the plant, the surrounding soil matrix and other microorganisms. Additionally, the project aims to obtain knowledge on how soil biogeochemical status, water stress, and pathogen attack impact these interactions and plant performance. The project relies on a strain collection isolated from wheat rhizosphere, and the strains are used to study the mechanisms of microbe-microbe interactions on wheat roots and its impact on microbial assembly and function.
For the specific PhD project, the focus will be microbe-microbe interactions in relation to phosphorus availability for plant growth. The work will include in vitro studies of functional traits, strain engineering (e.g., construction of bioreporters and knockout mutants of strains from the strain collection), and Plant experiments using synthetic communities for analysis of community assembly under natural soil conditions.
The position is for 3 years, and the project will be carried out at Section of Microbial Ecology and Biotechnology, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, University of Copenhagen, with Associate Professor Mette Haubjerg Nicolaisen as the main supervisor. Being part of large project, the candidate will engage in teamwork both within the group and with national and international collaborators.
The position is to be filled by 1 January 2024 or as soon as possible hereafter.
Qualifications needed
The candidate will be enrolled in a three year full-time programwithin the framework of the regular PhD programme(5+3 scheme).
To be eligible for the regular PhD programme, you must have completed a degree programme, equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc + 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc) related to the subject area of the project, e.g. [relevant educations]. For information of eligibility of completed programmes, see General assessments for specific countries and Assessment database.

Main tasks of the appointed applicant
Terms of employment in the regular programme
Employment as PhD fellow is full time and for maximum 3 years.
Employment is conditional upon your successful enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.
