Kongens Lyngby
We are now advertising the first of four positions at DTU Physics within our new project UltraBat - Capturing Ultrafast Electron and Ion Dynamics in Batteries - generously funded for 4 years by EU Horizon RIA with partners in Denmark, Germany, and France.
The positions at DTU Physics are centered around ultrafast (femtoseconds to nanoseconds) X-ray experiments using synchrotrons and XFELs, with a focus on charge injection, ion transfer, and structural dynamics in realistic and model systems for Li-rich compounds. The positions will span experimental efforts at large scale X-ray facilities, handling and reduction of very large data sets, data analysis, and simulations of X-ray scattering and spectroscopy signatures of dynamic processes in battery materials. The theoretical/ simulation efforts are supported by project partners from DTU Energy, and the experimental efforts are supported by project partners from European XFEL.
Responsibilities and tasks
As the first PhD student on this project, you will work closely with the Postdoc and international partners on the simulation, acquisition, and analysis of synchrotron and XFEL data for novel battery materials. You will obtain insights into generating and analyzing large data sets, into advanced X-ray methods and into the fundamental physics and chemistry of Li-rich materials. You will be involved in all aspects of large-scale facilities research, from the initial beamtime application through measurement campaigns and data analysis towards publication of results.
Qualifications
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. You should have or very soon complete a master’s degree in Physics/Chemistry/ Nanotechnology/similar with very good grades, and familiarity with programming will be a definite plus.
As the position is very collaborative in nature, you should have an outgoing personality and enjoy working closely with colleagues and collaborators.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .
Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Prof. Martin M. Nielsen and Ass. Prof. Kristoffer Haldrup.
We offer
This position as PhD student in our group will offer you the opportunity to be a member of a research team where we aim to develop and utilize advanced experimental and simulation/computational techniques in the ultrafast time domain. You will get the opportunity to work at international large-scale facilities such as XFELs and synchrotrons, and via both the beamtimes and participation in international conferences, you will also build a large, international network. Further, you will obtain familiarity with state-of-the-art methods for molecular simulations (DFT, QM/MM, classical MD, etc.) through direct collaboration with our project partners from DTU Energy. The position as PhD student is fully salaried (approx. 4 k€/month starting salary, before taxes ) and is for 3 years.
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment.
