Kongens Lyngby
Are you interested in pursuing a PhD in Science and Technology Studies? The Department for Technology, Management and Economics calls for applicants to take up a PhD research on the social sustainability of algorithms in chronic pain management. With the PhD research we expect to gain a better understanding of patient knowledge and experience with chronic pain, as well as of the role of algorithmic systems in the management of pain. The findings of this study will contribute to the growing body of literature on the social power of algorithms, digital health technology, and care for the chronically ill.
The successful applicant will be based in the division Technology & Business Studies and conduct a qualitative research project about how people living with chronic pain use algorithmic tools in their care. Chronic pain is notoriously difficult to treat as it is subjective and often unpredictable. In this context, algorithmic systems promise to 'read out' patterns and insights from patient generated or passively collected data. While such tools promise to support patients, there are also issues that pose challenges to their social sustainability related to the misrecognition of patient knowledge, the illness experience, and data work. The candidate will investigate patients' knowledge practices and lived experiences at the interface of algorithms and chronic pain while also exploring new design strategies for co-creating socially sustainable algorithms in chronic care.
The PhD candidate will be supervised by Prof. Brit Ross Winthereik, Assistant Prof. Benjamin Lipp, and Associate Prof. Malte Ziewitz. The PhD is an Alliance PhD meaning that the research will be carried out in collaboration with Cornell University. The successful applicant will visit Cornell at least twice for a period of at least 3 months each for the purpose of organizing and conducting:
1) a joint field study with a Cornell PhD student to collaboratively develop and conduct a case study in the domain of algorithmic healthcare in the United States.
2) a co-creative workshop in collaboration with faculty at Cornell, Cornell Tech, and Weill Cornell Medicine.
Qualifications
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in Science and Technology Studies or adjacent disciplines, e.g., sociology, anthropology, information studies or disability studies.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .
