Kongens Lyngby

If you took the decision to go for an academic career in science and engineering and you want to develop and apply micrometeorological theory and methods and at the same time solve a severe environmental problem, you might be interested in joining the project “Greenhouse Gas Observation network for Denmark” as one of our new PhD students at DTU Sustain.

The GHG observation system contributes to the green transition of Denmark. You will work on a novel technique that allows observing fluxes of greenhouse gasses (GHG) in the atmospheric boundary layer in a suburban area around the City of Copenhagen. The scientific task is both technically and theoretically demanding and requires understanding of boundary layer processes and the technological and natural processes that govern GHG emissions and sequestration in a city.

You will contribute to the construction, test and application of the new multiple gas, tall tower turbulent gas flux observation system for the main long-living GHG: CO2, CH4 and N2O and other relevant indicator gasses, which is based on the eddy covariance technology. The scientific novelty lies in the attribution of the measured fluxes to processes in the city and to identify GHG emission dynamics and hotspots and hot moments as well as CO2 sequestration sites and processes. We aim at providing scientific data to determine the actual GHG emissions, which will show in the long-term the success of the green transition towards sustainable development in Denmark.

You will

  • Install and employ the GHG flux observation system at a tall tower in a suburb of Copenhagen.
  • Measure fluxes and ancillary data continuously over on year
  • Model the GHG fluxes from within the flux footprint area with current GHG reporting methodology and state of the art scientific models.
  • Assimilate the measured flux data into the estimates from bottom up modelling with advanced statistical methods
  • You will interact with stakeholders, present results and discuss the role of GHG budgets for the green transition in Denmark.

You have received academic training in one or more of the following fields:

  • micrometeorology or boundary-layer meteorology,
  • environmental sciences and engineering,
  • urban ecosystem ecology, geo-ecology or biogeochemistry

You are prepared to develop own and use existing computer programming codes for processing of larger data sets and modeling. We will use advanced statistical modelling tools to evaluate the results.

Basic knowledge of the Danish language is an advantage but not required. Professional English skills in speech and scientific writing are required.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
