We seek a dynamic, versatile and engaged research manager for our Freshwater Aquatic Ecology section of the Ecology Research Group at the Department of Biology, SDU. The research focus and rational of the Freshwater section is briefly described here.
Freshwater lakes throughout the world are in poor condition, mainly due to decades of heavy nutrient pollution. The main cause of poor water quality is phosphorous, which is an essential nutrient for all living organisms and causes excessive growth of phytoplankton, leading to reduced light conditions, increased oxygen consumption, and loss of biodiversity in our lakes.
P is a valuable fertilizer for the global food production, and at the same time a limited resource. Hence, there has been an increasing focus on reusing phosphorus from eg. sewage sludge and other waste products, and in general promoting a more phosphorus sustainable attitude in society. This way of circular thinking will now permeate to lake management, where the present restoration methods focus on a linear approach, where phosphorus is permanently bound in lake sediments by eg. aluminum or other phosphate binders.
The scientific focus of the group
We work with the restoration and creation of freshwater lakes. We aim at promoting a paradigm shift for lake restoration, where we co-think lake restoration and phosphorus recycling. The group furthermore focuses on carbon dynamics and atmospheric O2, CO2 and CH4 exchange in lakes and streams and nutrient and carbon turnover in freshwater sediments and macrophytes.
The candidate should have scientific expertise at the interface between terrestrial and aquatic environments (streams and freshwater and estuarine wetlands), as well as skills in nutrient cycling, analytical chemistry and water quality in aquatic ecosystems.
The candidate will be expected to:
• Participate in research, prepare and analyze data and assist with publications of results in peer reviewed journals
• Assist with and supervise various research projects
• Research-based establishment and improvement of analytical procedures and processes
• Assist with supervision of bachelor, master’s, and PhD projects
• Manage reporting, monitoring, resources, as well as student employees
• Work closely with team members to provide effective solutions and support
• Facilitate effective communication internally
• Ensure adherence to budgets and project schedules
• Participate in the teaching programme by contributing to courses
• Prepare grant proposals for management review and approval.
• Participate in departmental and university service and public outreach and governmental consultancy.
We expect that the applicant has:
• At least a M.Sc. in a relevant field (eg, biology, ecology, environmental chemistry)
• Effective data handling and processing skills, document control, and technical bench skills
• Strong problem-solving, training, team building, and mentoring abilities
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Employment shall take place in accordance with the framework agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC.
Applications must be submitted electronically using the link "Apply online". Attached files must be in Adobe PDF or Word format. Each box can only contain a single file of max. 10 Mb. We recommend that you read how to apply before you apply.
The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
