Odense M

The Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a four-year academic staff member. The position is available from 1 June or soon thereafter. Application deadline: 1 March 2021.

The position is part of an ongoing project on bat echolocation; investigating how bats actively control their emitted call and received echo to optimize perception. The project focus’ on work in our newly constructed wind tunnel utilizing a large-scale multi-microphone array and high-speed stereo video systems. It involves a large degree of methods development relating high-resolution echolocation beam shape reconstruction to high-speed 3D reconstruction of bat morphology.

The chosen candidate will join an innovative expanding bat echolocation lab and be a part of the Sound Communication and Behaviour group at SDU. She/he will benefit from a vibrant social and scientific environment with excellence within bioacoustic research, over a wide range of subjects, from sound production mechanisms to hearing development and anthropogenic noise.

Qualifications of the applicant
- Master’s degree – or similar – in biology or engineering, with a background in acoustics, bioacoustics or sensory biology is an advantage.
- Prior experience with acoustic analysis, image analysis, stereo video 3D reconstruction, signal processing and general software programming.
- Full proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Candidates with experience conducting and publishing independent scientific research will be favored.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
