The Section of Digital and High Frequency Electronics at the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is opening a Ph.D. position in the area of digital electronics for drone technologies.

The Section focuses on conducting research in digital and high-frequency electronics, embedded systems, control, and communication, utilizing cutting-edge reconfigurable computing and sensors. The aim is to develop next-generation electronics and computing solutions that solve technology-related challenges in fields such as autonomous robots, drones, IoT, smart grid, and healthcare.

The section is a vital component of our educational programs in electrical engineering in Odense, offering Bachelor’s and Master of Science degrees in Electronics Engineering. Currently, the section focuses on two research fields: 1) Drones for Infrastructure Inspections and Interactions (DIII) and 2) IoT in health care (IoTH). Over the next few years, the section is expected to expand to include at least 20 academics, including PhD students and engineers, to support research funding, industrial collaboration, and educational activities. This growth will enable the section to continue its contribution to the field of electrical engineering and related areas.

The SDU campus in Odense comprises five faculties and soon also a large university hospital creating a great concentration of academics and students facilitating interdisciplinary research and rich student life. The city of Odense is culturally rich surrounded by a vibrant and growing robotics community and highly livable with a green banked meandering river cutting through the centre and attractive residential areas.

Job Description:

Enroll in our Ph.D. program, where you will delve into AI-powered reconfigurable drones, and work on the development of drones that are adaptable for fulfilling different task requirements. Your responsibilities as a PhD student encompass cutting-edge research in reconfigurable onboard computing and drone hardware/software design for autonomous operations. The PhD work aligns with the Horizon Europe SPADE project, ensuring your contributions directly impact the project's innovative testbeds. As a Ph.D., collaborative synergy will be a cornerstone as you work alongside accomplished peers, including Ph.D. students and postdocs from the DIII group. Qualifications Required:

  • The applicant must hold an MSc degree in robotics, drones, digital electronics, autonomous systems, or a related field.
  • Hardware skills in digital electronics, hardware programming (FPGA/MPSoC), and hardware architectures.
  • Software skills in C, C++, Python, and ROS.
  • Good academic writing skilling.

Conditions of employment
Applicants are required to have a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position. Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission. Employment and enrollment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.

The application must be in English and must include the following - the required forms must be found at the Faculty website:
  • Completed TEK PhD application form for 5+3 applicants. Find the form at the Faculty website.
  • Motivation letter stating your specific interest, motivation and qualifications for the project in question (max. 2 pages). Upload in the field called “Project description”.
  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae, describing research, publication and teaching experience, computational skills and including personal contact information.
  • Verified copies of the official bachelor diploma and master's diploma and transcripts of exams, both the original documents and in professional English translation.
  • Completed TEK PhD form for calculation grade point average. Find the form at the Faculty website. Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”.
  • An official document describing the grading scheme of the awarding universities (if not Danish). Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”.
  • An official and verified written assessment of the thesis or dissertation project from the grade giving institution, if the thesis/examination project is evaluated by approved/passed. The statement must clearly state that the candidate has been among the top 30 pct. in the graduation class for the study programme.
  • List of publications and maximum 2 examples of relevant publications, in case you have any publications. Please attach one pdf-file for each publication.
  • Up to three names and emails of researchers, who can provide an informed reference letter at short notice. (Reference letters and other relevant qualifications may also be included.) You're welcome to use the form for reference letter at the Faculty website.
