As Marine Environmental Manager you play a key role in achieving our goals of protecting the environment in which we operate our vessels.

The Environmental Manager is a trusted collaborator and internal consultant to the vessels’ Masters and Chief Engineers as well as to the wider Fleet Management and Technology and Maersk organization.

You will report to the Head of Quality, Environment and Security and act as center of excellence for maritime environmental management and compliance – particularly regarding MARPOL and relevant regional environmental legislation.

You will work closely with our Sustainability team and the environmental team taking care of our landside operations to develop and execute on our ESG strategy and plans for Environment and Ecosystems – with special focus on the topic of Ecosystem Health and Biodiversity.

Furthermore, you initiate and drive internal compliance and environmental improvement projects involving all relevant internal as well as external stakeholders.

Key responsibilities


• Act as primary contact for our seafarers and shore organization on maritime environmental issues ensuring our environmental compliance

• Promote good environmental practices and awareness among company shore employees and seafarers

• Ensure preparation, implementation, certification, and improvement as well as simplification of the company’s Environmental Management System and verify key environmental processes

• Map, analyze and advise on upcoming legal requirements on environmental legislation in coordination with the rest of the team

• Ensure that Management Plans are kept up to date and are well implemented on board the vessels

• Liaise with internal stakeholders on environmental strategies to ensure that environmental management supports Maersk overall environmental strategy

• Develop, execute and monitor our ESG plans for Ecosystem Health and Biodiversity

• Manage and document progress towards environmental objectives and targets by maintaining appropriate environmental performance data and furthermore support the data reporting for meeting e.g., EU and IMO requirements.

• Provide input as relevant during regulatory consultations regarding new environmental legislation as applicable (EU, US and IMO etc.).

We are looking for


A new colleague who has worked with environmental management in a shipping context for a number of years – likely in a shipping company or in the off-shore industry perhaps in combination with experience from a classification society or a public authority etc.

You have sailed in a senior rank or have work experience at a senior level within environmental management.

You have likely studied Navigation and/or Ship’s Engineering or hold a relevant engineering or master’s degree.

You have excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage people.

You are a self-starter who identifies and anticipates future challenges, work to optimize and simplify our environmental processes and can work independently on assigned tasks with minimal supervision.

Furthermore, you have:

• Strong focus on simplifying processes and documentation

• Strong coaching, negotiation, influencing, written and verbal communications skills

• Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects

• Ability to work independently

• Excellent group and process facilitation skills.
