Serve as a key Finance contact in Copenhagen, managing the accounting for and financial control over Maersk Oil Trading’s self-supply and DOB commodity trading activity in the region. This includes monitoring multiple trading data interfaces with the general ledger system, and applying technical accounting judgement to achieve IFRS compliant accounting treatment for all trades and structures, including complex trades involving optionality and financing components. In addition, the person in this role will work closely with Product Control and Front Office to bridge the gap between accounting EBIT and Trading Performance reported to management through the Daily P&L, as well as providing direction to regional Trade Control staff.Responsibilities include (not prioritised):

  • Ensuring all relevant commodity/ trading accounting and controlling tasks are completed on time and to a high standard
  • Trading Margin accounting, including technical accounting judgement to achieve IFRS compliant accounting treatment for all trades and structures, including complex trades involving optionality and financing components
  • Partner with Product Controllers to understand key P&L performance drivers
  • Perform reconciliation of Commercial Trading Performance to IFRS/IAS compliant Financial P&L and validation of all adjustments
  • Support on Financial Planning & Analysis deliverables and budget/forecast assumptions
  • Accounting for Trading/Commodity components of other income/expense
  • Calculation and validation of financial returns by business unit/desk
  • Account for derivatives and perform reconciliations of Exchange account balances between general ledger and third party statements, investigating and clearing any differences
  • Working capital analysis by business unit, including forecast and variance analysis
  • Accounting for Trading finance agreements
  • Periodic review and substantiation of Balance Sheet including
  • Intercompany reconciliations
  • Researching and agreeing technical accounting treatments for Trading/ Commodity transactions, including discussion and agreement with the external auditor
  • Analysis and reporting for statutory financial reporting – primarily IFRS 9
  • Maintaining accounting documentation for Trading/Commodity transactions
  • Preparation of Financial Reporting statements
  • Coordinate periodic audit processes with external auditors
  • Perform operational process reviews with view to implement contrinuous improvements

Experience required

  • Commodity controlling & trading accounting (preferably with Oil experience), including managing bulk trade system data, complex reconciliation, and application of technical accounting adjustments to commercial data
  • Detailed understanding of systems interfaces and information flows for a commodity trading business (Experience with Allegro would be a plus)
  • Identification and repair of systematic process errors, involving effective working with upstream control and IT functions
  • Efficient and controlled management of large and complex data sets
  • Reconciliation of trade financial data from commercial reporting to IFRS compliant financial reporting, including calculation and validation of financial accounting adjustments
  • Management of reconciliation processes across a large international group
  • Critical analysis of financial data and identification/ investigation of inconsistent/ unusual data
  • Presentation and justification of accounting treatment for complex/ structured transactions, including preparation of accounting summary papers for auditor review

Technical requirements

  • Qualified Accountant with several years post qualification experience
  • Detailed understanding of standards relating to financial instruments/ derivatives accounting, measurement and disclosure, including IFRS9 and IFRS13
  • Solid understanding of trading business systems including Trade Management (energy derivatives, FX, exchange traded products), scheduling/ operations, and interfaces to general ledger
  • Detailed understanding of balance sheet, cash flow and income statement impacts of a wide spectrum of trade types over their full lifecycle
  • Experience with cash flow hedge accounting would be a plus
  • Design and operation of controls suitable for high volume data manipulation and processing, including component and summary reconciliations of income statement, and balance validations
  • Excellent Excel skills, including design of robust templates and processes for calculation and analysis, and use of advanced Excel features
  • Design, implementation and operation of processes incorporating controls to secure completeness and accuracy of component financial information

  • Capable of working effectively across all levels of the organisation, as demonstrated through the ability to work collaboratively with junior process oriented staff through to commercially focused traders and originators, and across all functional areas of a trading business
  • Ability to understand and define complex business processes and systems, and the interfaces between modular integrated business systems.
  • Ability to understand and analyse data from multiple perspectives (e.g. commercial P&L vs. IFRS compliant financial result), and produce coherent reconciliation between these views
  • Clear communication and explanation, including complex technical accounting and processes, to non-specialised audience
  • Positive approach to challenges, including encouragement and motivation of others
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to thoroughly and effectively review and check data and reports, and critically review analysis produced by self and others
  • Ability to organise and prioritise multiple tasks and deadlines, and to complete work to a high standard
