DTU Space – Denmark’s national space institute – is a world leading institute that specializes in space research and space technology at the highest international level. Located as part of the Technical University of Denmark in the Greater Copenhagen area it is the national center for space research, geodesy and space technology.
DTU Space offers related public sector consultancy services – mostly related to Denmark’s membership of the European Space Agency (ESA). The department works extensively with foreign space agencies, universities and research institutes as well as companies in the space industry. These collaborations are expected to be enhanced further.
The department also has overall responsibility for a Bachelor and Master’s degree programme in Earth and Space Physics and Engineering. The department’s activities within the fields of research, teaching, public authority projects and innovation are focused around the following themes:
- Astrophysics and planetary physics
- Observation and monitoring of the Earth, its environments, climate, sea level, polar ice sheets and sea ice
- Gravity and geomagnetic field research
- Geodetic reference models, GNSS, GIS and mapping
- Satellite missions and measuring instruments (optical, radar, microwave, X-ray and magnetic observations)
Your areas of responsibility
As Head of Department, your responsibility will be the department’s quality and development within the fields of research, public sector consultancy, teaching and innovation. In addition, the Head of Department is responsible for the day-to-day management of the department and as such also for supporting employees and their competence development at an elite university. This includes the recruitment and staffing of key research positions, the development of talented and ambitious research talents and continued contribution to securing the necessary funding and research grants.
The head of department must be a leader who respects and recognizes the diversity of the department's very different departments and understands how to handle the differences. DTU Space is a very broadly composed institute with many focus areas. It is an institute with a close interaction between engineers and researchers and it is this synergy that makes the institute strongly recognized.
Lastly, the Head of Department has overall financial responsibility for the department. The department’s total turnover amounts to approx. DKK 150 million per year, approximately two thirds of which comes from external sources. There are around 170 employees, of which more than 150 are academics with 35 of these being PhD students. The department is organized into 5 research sections, a cross cutting division for Innovation and Consultancy, and an institute secretariat.
An experienced leader with ability to create cohesion
We expect the new Head of Department to have an in-depth knowledge and research experience within one or more of the Department’s focus areas. Experience from international space missions and astrophysics will be an advantage.
It is expected that you have demonstrated leadership experience and can create cohesion internally within the organization and across DTU – and see new opportunities, inspire and set direction, while at the same time creating a balanced space for leadership at the institute.
The ideal candidate can furthermore be recognized in the following description:
- Familiar with the Danish university and research environment
- An in-depth knowledge of international space research
- Professionally engaged in one or more of the Department’s research areas
- Management experience from a scientific environment with academic values where the human dimension also is important
- Management experience from an equivalent professional environment where commitment and independence are of paramount importance
- A results-oriented management style with the focus on collaboration, communication and delegation
- Possess a wide and active professional international network
- Has successfully attracted external funding
- Can read and speak Danish or a willingness to quickly learn
- Strong Communications skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be for a fixed term and on terms similar to those stipulated in the “Circular regarding Heads of Departments and deans of studies at the universities” and be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations.
