The Royal Danish Theatre and the Royal Danish Academy of Music are looking for a head of the Opera Academy from 1 May 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Opera Academy

The Opera Academy is a unique collaboration between the Royal Danish Theatre as a cultural institution and the Royal Danish Academy of Music as an educational institution. The Opera Academy offers a two-year master’s degree in Vocal Performance specialising in opera and a two-year soloist education (Young Artist Programme) with opera at the highest level. There are currently 18 students enrolled in the courses.

The head of the Opera Academy reports to the Opera Academy Council, which consists of the principle of the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the artistic director of the Royal Danish Opera. On a daily basis, the head reports to the head of opera.

Your tasks
As the head of the Opera Academy, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management, including the organisation and implementation of all the Opera Academy’s teaching activities, the student's participation in the Royal Danish Theatre’s productions, admission tests, examinations, concerts, etc. in collaboration with the Opera and the Royal Danish Academy of Music, students and teachers. You will be in charge of personnel management for the Opera Academy's employees, and will also take care of the collaboration with the Royal Danish Academy of Music in connection with the students' vocal performance education.

As the head of the Opera Academy, you will act as the students’ daily contact in connection with their education and are expected to have in-depth knowledge of the training of opera singers and the organisation of educational processes that take into account voice development and associated musical and dramatic education.

In addition to the day-to-day operation of the education, you will also be responsible for strengthening the recruitment basis for talent, including the programme’s international perspective, and focusing on developing international collaborations that can position the Academy of Opera’s programmes as among the leading in Europe.

At the same time, you will contribute to the quality development of the training, both administratively in relation to optimisation of process flows and in terms of content, ensuring it stays as up-to-date and meaningful as possible with the students and their future.

You will become a member of the management group of the Opera and, together with the other management members, work to ensure a good and effective study and working environment for the Opera Academy’s students and employees.

About you
We imagine that you have a background as a professional singer, repetiteur, conductor, producer or similiar.

It is an advantage if you have:

  • knowledge of voices and voice development and broad repertoire knowledge
  • experience in facilitating and organising educational programmes that ensure the best possible delivery of the individual student’s potential
  • an active international network
  • experience of working with opera at a high professional level and what is required of an opera singer at this level
  • knowledge of music drama education, preferably at higher education level – including knowledge of study programmes, exams and regulatory requirements
  • management experience
  • teaching qualifications
  • experience with major music drama productions – preferably from a major opera house
  • experience in administration, public and financial management, and makes a virtue in ensuring things are under control

As a person, you are proactive, development-oriented and able to turn ideas into action. You have excellent collaborative skills and are naturally curious and good at listening.

Terms of employment
The position is limited to a period of four years.

You will be employed according to the applicable national agreement or individual contract, depending on competences and qualifications. If you are covered by the Agreement of the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations, you will be placed as a senior consultant with personnel responsibility.

The employment is full-time to be started per 1 May 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter

The place of work is the Opera House, but meeting activities are also expected to take place at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Rosenørns Allé 22, Frederiksberg.
