Help ensure that the Danish Red Cross can provide lifesaving response

The position forms part of the cooperation between Danish Red Cross and the branch of Faroe Islands Red Cross. Speaking Faroese is therefore a must.

The Danish Red Cross and the branch of Faroe Islands Red Cross offer a Project Delegate position for recent graduates where you will be based in Malawi and become part of a strong and professional team.

We are looking for a candidate who is interested in humanitarian and development work and would like to kick start a career in an international organization. You might not have a lot of experience but is eager and open to learn.

The Project Delegate will be part of the Danish Red Cross Country Office in Malawi. You will be introduced to and trained in project management and provide support to emergencies and disasters with a specific focus on forecast based actions (FbA). Together with the team, you will support and further strengthen the development of the forecast-based action approach in Malawi as well as support resource mobilization for such. You will therefore work with Danish Red Cross technical specialists working with FbA and information and data management as well as with the resource and mobilization team.

The position falls under the Disaster Management Unit in the International Department at the Danish Red Cross HQ in Copenhagen. However, the Project Delegate will be based in Malawi and will be under the immediate supervision of the Danish Red Cross Country Manager.

Your profile

  • Fluent in Faroese is a must
  • Relevant studies such as Geography, Social or Political Science, Disaster Management, IT and Data Management or Engineering
  • Experience with international work or volunteer work in an international organization – experience with Red Cross is an asset
  • Would like to kick start a career in an international organization and are willingness and openness to learn more
  • Preferred knowledge and experience from Forecast-Based Action and innovative disaster financing
  • Excellent reporting skills in Danish and English
  • Excellent skills around data and information management
  • An excellent communicator, with good negotiation skills and a diplomatic flair
  • Planning and coordination skills
  • Understanding that process and ownership are key to achieving results in culturally and politically sensitive environments.
  • Full proficiency in Microsoft Office package and an advantage if also in GIS
  • Valid international driving license

Your tasks

You will be trained in and receive support with the following tasks:

  • Support the implementation of ECHO projects in close collaboration with the ECHO programme delegate and regional FbA delegate.
  • Support the development of the FbA concept and approach within the Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) Disaster Management Unit.
  • Support improved use of data and information management in FbA and disaster management (DM) at large in MRCS.
  • Support the development of the Impact-based Forecasting dashboard in collaboration with 510 and MRCS.
  • Ensure visibility of the FbA concept and approach in Malawi to the Danish and Faroese public and current and potential donors.
  • Support the development of innovative financing solutions for disaster preparedness/response and recovery in Malawi.
  • Develop and organize a cooperative program between Faroese Red Cross and Malawi Red Cross Society.

We work specifically on building preparedness and response capacity. DRC works both with long term activities and short-term response in particular within health, disaster preparedness and response.

Employment Conditions

The right candidate will be offered a contract for a period of 12 months, ideally beginning 1st of November 2021 or soon thereafter, with potential for a possible extension (funding permitting).

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the DRC Terms and Conditions for Delegates and will be 33,600 DKK per month. The duty station is Malawi and the delegate reports to the Country Manager in Malawi. The position is a Non-family position meaning that spouses and children cannot join.
