Kongens Lyngby

We seek a talented and engaged postdoc willing to be part of a world leading research environment and contribute to laying the foundation for a new concept of the North Sea Energy Hub, able to integrate massive amounts of wind power.

Center for Electric Power and Energy (CEE) provides cutting edge research in sustainable, reliable and cost-efficient energy systems to the benefit of society. At CEE you will enjoy the advantages of a creative and inspiring work environment shared with about 100 highly skilled and motivated colleagues. Our new colleague will be affiliated with the Electric Power Systems research group.

As a postdoc in techno-economic analysis of power-to-gas (P2G) and battery energy storage systems (BESS) you have significant impact on shaping research towards realization of the North Sea Energy Hub.

The goal of the techno-economic analysis is to identify how P2G and BESS technologies could improve energy yield, reliability and cost of large and far offshore wind power plants.

In collaboration with industry partners and colleagues at CEE, you will be responsible for identifying novel concepts within P2G and BESS and selecting promising technologies for further studies in a subsequent research project to be conducted in relation to the North Sea Energy Hub (description below).

Responsibilities and tasks

At CEE, we recently initiated a pre-study aiming at identifying innovative solutions for a cost-efficient implementation of the North Sea Energy Hub. The intention is to realize the large amount of far offshore wind power potential in the North Sea with a concept known as Hub and Spoke. The idea behind the hub and spokes concept is to construct one or more artificial island, or large offshore substations, on which several gigawatts of wind power can be tied-in and exported to countries around the North Sea. This requires a tremendous transmission infrastructure, and the project might benefit from synergies between electricity and other energy carriers, such as P2G and BESS.

Your contributions in this regard could be of great value. We expect you to establish and communicate an overview of candidate technologies within P2G and BESS.

Then apply your profound understanding of energy systems (electrical or other) for assessing the candidate technologies according to a range of criteria, including;
  • Cost and benefits
  • Ability to operate in and/or support weak electric grids with zero or low inertia
  • Environmental impact
  • Technological maturity

Lastly, you will collaborate with colleagues and industry partners in defining research projects to support the deployment of novel concepts for the North Sea Energy Hub to the benefit of society.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent within energy systems, electric power systems, electro-chemical processes or similar.

Experience in research grant applications or project management is an advantage.
