DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering and its Section for Engineering Design and Product Development invite applications for a full professorship in the field of sustainable product/service-systems. The Section is an internationally recognized research unit, currently with a scientific staff of 40, including 9 faculty members and a mix of senior researchers, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students.

The department's decision to strengthen research, innovation and education in Sustainable Product/Service-Systems is a result of an increased focus on this field of research and acknowledgement of the importance in engineering education. Particular focus is on design and development for the Circular Economy, seeking engineering and sociotechnical solutions and contribution to industrial challenges and opportunities.

The professorship involves research, research-based teaching and innovation within the overall domain of engineering design and product development. In particular, the professor must demonstrate an ability to carry out state-of-the-art research in the areas of Product/Service-Systems Design, Sustainable Design and Innovation, Design for Circular Economy as well as Life Cycle Engineering.

Responsibilities and tasks

The professor must conduct original and relevant research within the field of sustainable product/service-systems-including circular economy, life cycle engineering, and sustainable design-and will take a leading role within the research field. Thus, besides his/her own research, the professor will scientifically lead and inspire a group of scientists.

Specifically, the professor will:
  • carry out and lead research and research projects of international calibre within the field of sustainable product/service-systems (including circular economy, life cycle engineering, and sustainable design)
  • supervise PhD-students, MSc-students, and BSc-students
  • participate in teaching in courses at the PhD, MSc and BSc levels, primarily related to product/service-systems and sustainable design
  • act as a mentor for assistant and associate professors

  • engage in international networks and cooperate with relevant international scientific communities.

The research field shares scientific methodologies with other groups at DTU, particularly the Division for Engineering Systems and the Division for Quantitative Sustainable Assessment, both at DTU's Department of Management Engineering. Thus, the professor should sustain and develop collaboration in research, education, and innovation with these sections.

The successful candidate is expected to take a lead position in teaching at the BSc, MSc, and PhD levels. For international candidates, DTU can provide Danish language courses enabling the candidates to teach in Danish within 2-3 years.

Qualifications

Potential candidates for the professorship must hold a PhD degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Design. Candidates must be able to document their teaching qualifications.

The successful candidate has a strong theoretical and applied background within product development and in particular the development and implementation of sustainable product/service-systems and circular economy.

Furthermore, the professor must be capable of undertaking scientific leadership in the theoretical, methodological, and applied perspectives within the field of sustainable product/service-systems and circular economy at the highest international level. It is of paramount importance that the candidate possesses experience from both theoretical and practical-oriented projects within the field of product development.

Research management experience is a requirement of the professor. Extensive experience from international research cooperation will be a clear advantage, e.g. formalized project cooperation, professional trust positions, and strength of personal network within the field of product development research. The candidate must also document an extensive track record of attracting research funding.

The successful candidate should be able to document substantial experience of teaching at the BSc, MSc, and PhD level within product development, which should also include the development of course curricula.
