DTU Mechanical Engineering at Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as Professor in corrosion and surface engineering.

DTU Mechanical Engineering is contributing to research, innovation, and education within the following scientific areas: Structural and solid mechanics, fluid and hydrodynamics, applied thermodynamics, manufacturing technology, engineering design and product development, materials- and surface engineering.

The professor will be affiliated to the Section of Materials and Surface Engineering (MTU), which is one of six sections in the Department.

Responsibilities and tasks

Faculty in the MTU section is involved in teaching materials science and engineering with emphasis on metallic materials. The Section attracts students from various study lines.

The professor will have a leading role in the research and innovation in corrosion and surface engineering.

The professor will be responsible for research and innovation in the following fields:
  • Experimental electrochemical methods for characterization of corrosion performance at macro- and micro-scale
  • Application of microscopical and spectroscopical techniques for materials characterization, particularly with respect to environmental and aqueous corrosion.
  • Surface engineering of light metals
  • Corrosion engineering of (light) metals and electronic materials
  • Corrosion failure analysis and engineering


The professor has to establish, intensify or extend relations to other relevant research groups at DTU, (inter)national academia and industry.

Responsibilities as project manager as well as commitment to acquiring external financing are mandatory. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to a continuous expansion of national and international networking activities.

The successful candidate is expected to take a lead position in teaching at the BSc, MSc and PhD levels. For international candidates, DTU can provide Danish language courses enabling the candidates to teach in Danish within 2-3 years.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a very strong scientific background in materials science and engineering, in particular in corrosion engineering of metals and electronic materials and surface engineering of light metals.

The successful candidate is expected to have relations to other relevant, internationally esteemed research groups in academia and industry.

Achievements are expected in extension of the position's qualification requirements, which are:
  • Extensive original scientific output at a competitive international level in surface engineering and corrosion engineering
  • Documented experience in more than one of the following fields:
  • Research leadership, including management tasks in national or international projects, research programmes, conferences, etc.
  • Teaching experience at different academic levels, and the potential for providing accomplished teaching.
  • Innovation, including the advancement of patent areas, the application of research results in commercial contexts, etc.
  • Experience with managing a research team is essential and the applicants are expected to have wide experience with attracting external funding for research and innovation from national and international sources.

In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:
  • Documented experience and quality of teaching and curriculum development
  • Research impact and experience, funding track record and research vision
  • Societal impact
  • Documented innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • International impact and experience
  • Leadership and collaboration
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
