Within the ERC Consolidator Grant “Towards a transdisciplinary demographic theory of birth and death trajectories”, we are opening one or more positions as assistant professor in demography at the Danish Centre for Population Research of The Interdisciplinary Centre on Population Dynamics (CPop) at the University of Southern Denmark, Campus Odense. The position is expected to start on October 1 or soon thereafter. It is a fixed term position of three years, with a possibility of extension by one year.

The basic idea of the ERC Consolidator Grant is to use established methods and models of mortality research and apply those to discover and model macro level regularities in fertility patterns. The new assistant professors are expected to contribute to this ERC research, and eventually also to develop their own projects supported by external grants.

The Centre is one of the leading teams in the world for demographic mortality modelling and forecasting. One of the prime directions of the Centre’s research is ageing in modern societies and its diverse implications. We study patterns of changing mortality and morbidity, mostly in human populations but also in non-human species. We maintain a strong and unique profile in analytical demography and are expanding to also include more application-oriented research like pension schemes, covid-19 demography, and climate change.

The Centre is part of the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences and collaborates with researchers in economics and political science, as well as researchers in other fields including evolutionary ecology, conservation biology, mathematics and data analysis in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, biodemography and health economics in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and literature and media science in the Faculty of Humanities. Across the disciplines, the Centre is now expanding towards fertility research.

As of Fall 2024, the Centre will start a new Master's programme on Population Studies and the assistant professors are expected to contribute to teaching and student supervision. However, teaching load will be small.
