The Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics of the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is accepting applications for a Full Professor in Interdisciplinary Social Science in Sustainable Development to join the Management and Economics of Resources and the Environment (MERE) group. The starting date of the position is 1. 11. 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. You can read more on the Department here.
Job description
The candidate should have interests that complement the research group. The research group profile is available at this website. The focus of the MERE group puts specific emphasis on economic uses of the interlinked biosphere and biophysical systems as well as risk analysis and management. There is a significant marine and maritime focus to the group.
The applicant should have made significant contributions to interdisciplinary research pertaining to sustainable development. They should demonstrate the ability to publish original research of high quality. Research foci that bridge connections between stakeholders and management for sustainable development in marine and coastal resources and/or energy transitions are welcome. This includes the incorporation of risk communication and risk management into development strategies.
The applicant must demonstrate previous experience in developing new curricula. Experience managing curricula is advantageous. The candidate should have strong interdisciplinary skills and an interest and ability to teach in the department’s programs in Environmental and Resource Management (MSc), Risk management (MSc), and Business Economics (BSc). The Business Economics program includes an Energy Management line. Supervision of PhD students and teaching PhD courses are expected tasks.
We expect the incumbent to have a strong record in securing extramurally funded and inter- /trans- disciplinary research projects. This will include assisting in building collaborative relationships and networks with local, regional, national and/or international partners. As senior scholar, the candidate is expected to contribute actively to the social and academic lives at the Department as well as participate in the guidance of doctoral students and junior faculty. Also, we expect active and constructive participation in the university's academic administration. To fulfill the requirements of the position, the candidates chosen are expected to be physically present on a regular basis and approx. 3 days pr. week.
While the research group mainly consists of economists, the research is often placed in multidisciplinary academic and international environments. Research and teaching activities should strengthen societal engagement in solutions to problems of sustainable development. SDU is actively working to broaden inter- and trans- disciplinary research. In this context, researchers in the MERE group are active participants with leadership roles in Clusters within the Department of Business and Social Science, and the Blue SDU and SDG Collab networks at the university level, and the University of the Arctic and Willis Research Network worldwide that work to foster research connections. They also participate and lead in several EU Consortiums and broader networks.
The assessment committee evaluates the applications based on the scholarly qualification guidelines of the department. Ability to teach and network in Danish language is a strong advantage and will be required after a maximum of 2 years. Language acquisition will be supported by the department and Esbjerg Kommune.

The Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics is part of the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, is in Esbjerg, and employs some 45 members of staff. The Department emphasizes sociology, business economics, and environmental and resource economics. It conducts research in the following areas organized as research groups: (i) Markets, Organization & Behavior, (ii) Environmental and Resource Economics and (iii) Rural and Cultural Sociology. The Department provides teaching for degrees in General Business Economics (B.Sc.), Marketing and Innovation (M.Sc.), Sport and Event Management (B.Sc. and M.Sc.), Energy Management (B.Sc.), Environmental and Resource Management (M.Sc.), Sociology and Cultural Analysis (B.Sc and M.Sc.), and diploma and MBA programs in business.
