The Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics of the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is accepting applications for a 6-year tenure-track Assistant Professorposition in applied risk and insurance research. The position is located at the campus in Esbjerg The starting date of the position is August 1st, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The candidate should have interests that complement the research group, Management and Economics of Resources and the Environment (MERE). The research group profile is available at this website. The focus of the MERE group puts specific emphasis on economic uses of the interlinked biosphere and biophysical systems as well as risk analysis and management.
We expect the applicant to assist in the development of an extramurally funded and inter- /trans- disciplinary research program focused on developing new understandings of applied economics and risk management for sustainable transitions. This will include assisting in building collaborative relationships with local, regional, national and/or international partners.
The candidate should have strong quantitative skills and an interest and ability to teach in some of the department’s programs in Risk management (MSc), Business Economics (BSc), and Environmental and Resource Management (MSc). The Business Economics program includes an Energy Management line. Ability to teach and network in Danish language is a strong advantage and will be required after a maximum of 2 years. Language acquisition will be supported by the department and Esbjerg Kommune.
While the research group mainly consists of economists, the research is often placed in multidisciplinary academic and international environments. Research and teaching activities should strengthen societal engagement in solutions to problems of sustainable development. SDU is actively working to broaden inter- and trans- disciplinary research. In this context, researchers in the MERE group are active participants with leadership roles in Clusters within the Department of Business and Social Science, and the Blue SDU and SDG Collab networks at the university level, and the University of the Arctic and Willis Research Network worldwide that work to foster research connections. They also participate and lead in several EU Consortiums and broader networks.
The assessment committee evaluates the applications based on the scholarly qualification guidelines of the department.
The Department provides a competitive salary, modern facilities for research and teaching, as well as resources for research assistants and for travel and conference participation. Tenure-Track
An assigned mentor will provide the tenure-track assistant professor with guidance related to career development, other academic topics and administrative procedures.
Performance of the tenure-track assistant professor will be followed via internal yearly evaluations and a mid-term and final international evaluation by an assessment committee. If the ‘final appraisal’ is positive you will be promoted as associate professor. Performance and progression are to be evaluated in general towards the criteria set out in the qualification guidelines of the Department (link to the guidelines).
Research and teaching will be predominant in the position. Other types of assignments may occur to a limited degree. The University determines the distribution of the various assignments. The weighting of the different assignments may vary over time.
After a 6-year tenure-track period tenure-track assistant professors are expected to explicitly meet the following criteria:

Appointment to the position requires a PhD or equivalent and will be in accordance with the salary agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

When the assessment committee has submitted its report, the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her.
Applications that are incomplete with regard to the above requirements will not be assessed by the committee.
Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process.

- A strong publication track record, including a significant number of corresponding authorships and at least some publications in high-ranked journals based on work carried out during the tenure-track period.
- Participating in successful external funded research projects
- Major contributions to the development of an existing research group demonstrating an ability to collaborate within the research group
- Completed https://www.SDU.dk/en/om_SDU/institutter_centre/c_unipaedagogik/universitetspaedagogikum and established a teaching portfolio via teaching and participation in the pedagogic development of the Department
- Successful supervision of MSc students
