Frederiksberg C
The Soil Fertility Group, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen has a 3-year full time postdoc position open, from May 1, 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter. Place of employment will be at Thorvaldsensvej 40, 1871 Frederiksberg C, Denmark.
Description of the scientific environment
The Soil Fertility research group focuses on soil and waste organic matter decomposition processes and soil nutrient turnover, availability and losses in agro-ecosystems. Our research aims at a mechanistic understanding of soil nutrient and organic matter dynamics at both the level of micro-scale biogeophysical processes and at eco-system scales, in the pursuit of increased nutrient use efficiency, improved crop productivity and reduced environmental impacts from agriculture in the 21st century.
Project description
The postdoc will be working on a collaborative research project, titled Decoding the Rhizobiota Interactome for Improved Crop Resilience (INTERACT) which is part of a larger consortia under the Collaborative Crop Resiliency Program (https://ccrp.vcl.ncsu.edu/) funded by the Novo Nordic Foundation. The INTERACT project partners form an international, cross-disciplinary team with the overall aim to achieve a better temporal and spatial system understanding of the network of microbial-plant interactions and how these support the plant’s resistance to stress in a complex soil environment. This will be key to unlock the enormous microbial potential to contribute to the development of solutions that increase plant resilience and productivity in sustainable future cropping systems.
Job description
The postdoc’s duties will include research within soil fertility, gathering spatial and temporal high-resolution biogeochemical data. Tasks will include developing novel approaches and implementing new techniques to quantify and map gradients of biogeochemical and soil quality parameters across the rhizosphere. These techniques will elucidate how the abundance and concentration of key chemical species varies across the soil pore to root matrix and how this may influence microbial community structure and activity in bulk vs. rhizosphere and rhizoplane soil. The work will mainly be carried out in plant root/soil mesocosms under controlled conditions in growth chambers or greenhouses. The postdoc will be working with own data as well as with data from other project partners. The postdoc will collaborate closely with microbiologist and biochemists responsible for the characterization of microbiomes and metabolomes in the soil-rhizosphere-root-plant continuum. The post may also include other duties.
Required qualifications
