Frederiksberg
Postdoc researcher two-year position available in a project on new type of food allergy
A 2-year position as postdoc researcher is open at the Center for Clinical Research and Prevention (CCRP), Section of Epidemiology, Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital, The Capital Region.
About the project
Allergy to the carbohydrate galactose-α 1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) in red meat is a novel and potentially fatal disease characterized by urticaria (hives) and even anaphylaxis (allergic shock) occurring hours after ingestion of beef, pork, or lamb. An increasing number of cases have been reported, but data on prevalence is lacking. It is now clear that allergic sensitization to alpha-gal occurs in the skin via tick bites. The documented increase in tick exposure raises concern that red meat allergy could be increasing in Denmark. A correct diagnosis is important, since avoidance of red meat is an effective treatment. The project includes both epidemiological, clinical, and register-based studies. The project aims to assess the prevalence, time trends, and risk factors of red meat allergy in Denmark. Our goal is to provide knowledge of who are at risk of red meat allergy in both patient populations and in the general population in order to improve diagnosis and treatment. The project is an interdisciplinary and international collaboration. The two-year position is fully funded by a grant from The Independent Research Fund Denmark to the project ‘Red meat allergy in Denmark: an underrecognized cause of urticaria, angioedema and delayed allergic shock?’.
