(Readvertisement) Postdoc position within relative sea level data and databases

As part of the project “Building understanding of Greenland ice sheet change through Marine Limit and Relative Sea-Level databases”, funded by the Carlsberg Foundation, the Department of Glaciology and Climate at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) is hiring a Postdoc with expertise in relative sea level data for a period of 2.5 years (30 months) commencing October 1st 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description
Gaining a better understanding of the past history of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) under different climate conditions and deglacial states is extremely important for understanding how it will respond to present and future climate warming. Geophysical models that model the evolution of the ice sheet rely on marine limit and relative sea-level (RSL) data from the most recent deglacial period (c. 14,000 years ago to present) to tune and validate their outcome, and as such, the data is extremely important for understanding the response of solid earth to deglaciation of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

The Postdoc will compile all Greenland marine limit and RSL data and thus will contribute to an overview of the spatial variability of past land motion behavior of Greenland. Moreover, the Postdoc will develop new databases, containing all metadata, and which will be made open-access and publicly available.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with Co-I Associate Professor Dr. Sarah Woodroffe (Durham University, UK) and Co-I Emeritus Dr. Svend Funder (University of Copenhagen).

Your qualifications
The appointment will be made based on academic qualifications. The candidate should hold a PhD degree in Natural Sciences (e.g. Geology, Geosciences, Geography) and must have documented experience working with Late Glacial and Holocene material from the Arctic. It would be an advantage if the candidate has experience working with Relative Sea Level data from lake core data and terrestrial sea level indicators.

Experience with data assimilation studies, including database building/management would also be an advantage but is not a requirement. Proficiency in English is required, and organization and communication skills are important. Engagement in the project and interest in cross-collaborative methods and understanding is expected.

Department of Glaciology and Climate
The Department of Glaciology and Climate study both the current and past changes of the Greenland ice sheet and the ocean surrounding it. Past changes (last 10,000 years) in the ice sheet, ocean and biological systems are studied using marine sediment cores applying a broad variety of proxy methods. The current loss of ice from Greenland is studied using a network of climate stations, satellite observations and modeling. Besides doing research, we provide advice to government agencies and the private sector and provide supervision to university students.

The department has an international staff of c. 30 researchers, PhD students and postdocs. The appointment procedure
An expert academic assessment committee consisting of two internal senior researchers will make an individual evaluation of applicants’ academic qualifications, where candidates are deemed qualified or non-qualified in relation to the position advertised.
