The scholarship will be part time for 5 years (22.2 hours per week) and will be commencing on 1 September 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

For the preferred candidate the Department may be able to offer a part time position as a teaching assistant for 5 years connected to this PhD-project. This makes it possible to get a 5 year full time position.

Description of the scientific environment
The PhD project and the PhD student will be part of the section Sport, Individual & Society at the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports. A primary research aim of the section lies in sport promotion. The section therefore focuses upon ensuring meaningful experiences of being active and at the same time creating opportunities that can accommodate vulnerable target groups so that the general population increases its participation in physical activity. We emphasize both the broader health aspects of sport and exercise, as well as the potential for sport to engender amusement and pleasure. We work towards the development of socially inclusive communities and equality for all in sport and exercise. We do this via the application of a problem-oriented approach with significant impact that can make a positive difference for the general public, including all demographic and age groups. Project description
This project aims to explore which competencies are needed to teach gymnastics in formal education as well as to coach gymnastics in voluntary sports clubs. The project will also explore how courses/teacher training programmes can prepare future teachers and coaches to translate knowledge and skills into competencies in their teaching/coaching practice and how this development can continue after the completion of formal training.
This project operates in the intersection of sociology and pedagogy. Using qualitative methods, the PhD student will examine the current learning objectives concerning gymnastics in bachelor programmes in PE, teacher training, and coach education, and how these are understood and actualized. The PhD student is expected to connect the project to the current teaching at the BSc in Exercise and Sport Sciences. In order to carry out this project it will be necessary to explore how gymnastics is defined and understood by the involved parties and discuss the role of gymnastics in the PE curriculum.

More details about the project can be acquired by e-mailing Laila Ottesen: [email protected].

Principal supervisors are Associate Professor Laila Ottesen, Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, e-mail: [email protected], and Associate Professor Charlotte Svendler Nielsen, Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, e-mail: [email protected]
