The Department of Technology and Innovation (ITI), Faculty of Engineering (TEK) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites candidates to apply for a 3-year fully-funded PhD position in Urban Resilience. The position is within the Section for Civil and Architectural Engineering (CAE), which is located in Odense.
The starting date for the position is as soon as possible in 2020, preferably no later than 15 June 2020, and it will be agreed with the successful candidate. Application deadline is 6 May 2020.
Research environment
We are recruiting word-class researchers in order to expand our Urban Resilience group’s research capacities and strengthen our international collaborations. The specific position is for a high priority area with significant career development potential for the right candidate.
The post-holder will join the Urban Resilience group, which develops transdisciplinary research, education and knowledge transfer activities on urban resilient transition, addressing both causes and effects of climate change in cities. The group’s activities are aimed at informing policy making at international and national level, as well as at supporting science-based urban planning and design at local level, both in the global north and the global south.
The urban resilience group actively contributes to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement, the New Urban Agenda and the Sendai Action Framework for Risk Reduction.

Conditions of employment
Applicants are required to have a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position (start salary amounts to approx. 3.378,- EURO per month incl. supplements).
Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the Head of the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission to the PhD school. Employment and enrollment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.
A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.
Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

- Developing research in the field of Urban Resilience with high quality and high international impact, with specific focus on capacity-building;
- Participating in the Urban Resilience group research projects;
- Contributing to the development, management and delivery of educational and capacity-building programmes/activities of the International Urban Resilience Academy (IURA), a platform of SDU Section for Civil and Architectural Engineering (CAE);
- Assist in teaching in bachelor and master’s level courses and workshops, and co-supervising assistants and students in research work;
- Disseminating research and teaching and capacity-building activities results in peer-reviewed publications, international conferences, and forums;
- Engaging with industrial and academic partners, nationally and internationally, in relation to the field of research.
Qualifications
The call targets talented individuals who have:
- A master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master’s degree) in landscape architecture, architecture, urban planning, climate change, engineering or related disciplines;
- Experience in developing and delivering capacity-building and training courses for researchers, practitioner and policymakers with a highly international profile;
- Scientific and work experience in the global south, particularly internationally, is an asset;
- Experience of working in transdisciplinary and multi-cultural teams, establishing collaborative working practices and relations.

- Completed TEK PhD application form for 5+3 applicants.
- A letter stating your specific interest, motivation and qualifications for the project in question (max. 2 pages). Upload in the field called “Project description”.
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae, including personal contact information.
- A short PhD research proposal featuring: title, aim/objective, background, expected contribution, proposed methodology, work plan, bibliography (maximum five pages including references). Upload in the field called “Other relevant material”.
- Verified copies of the official bachelor diploma and master's diploma and transcripts of exams.
- Completed TEK PhD form for calculation grade point average. Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”.
- An official document describing the grading scheme of the awarding universities (if not Danish). Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”.
- An official and verified written assessment of the thesis or dissertation project from the grade giving institution, if the thesis/examination project is evaluated by approved/passed. The statement must clearly state that the candidate has been among the top 30 pct. in the graduation class for the study programme.
- At least two signed reference letters. Should your referees wish to send their letters directly to us, please mention three names and emails of researchers, who can provide an informed reference letter at short notice.
- List of publications and examples of the most relevant publications, if available. Please attach one pdf-file for each publication.
