The Department of Neuroscience, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen invites applications for a position as Professor in the area of experimental neuroanatomy. The position is to be filled by August 1st, 2020 or soon thereafter.

The Department of Neuroscience

The Department of Neuroscience employs academic and technical staff divided amongst 22 active research groups within the fields of cellular and molecular neuroscience, integrative neuroscience and motor control, neuropharmacology, cerebral fluids biology, autonomic systems, circadian rhythms, and brain development. The department performs basic and translational research with the goal to advance our understanding of brain functions as well as brain diseases and their treatment. The department hosts a PhD program in neuroscience and offers courses targeted to both pre- and postgraduate students in medicine (more than 500 students/year) and odontology, as well as in the programs of neuroscience, human biology, human physiology, molecular biomedicine, and biomedical engineering.

The position

The appointee is expected to take a leading role in establishing a strong research program in experimental neuroanatomy. The appointee is expected to ensure external funding for the research program, to develop a network of national and international collaborations, and to promote the biomedical aspects of this field of study. The appointee will partake in teaching and supervision of students at the undergraduate, graduate, PhD, and post-doc levels, with prime course assignments in the field of neuroanatomy, and will participate in diverse management tasks at the departmental level.

The candidate

Applicants should have a scientific background in experimental neuroanatomy preferentially within the area of circadian neurobiology. A significant track-record of successful external research funding, as well as a significant publication record in high-level, international, peer-reviewed ISI journals are required. It is essential that the applicant have obtained formal qualifications for academic teaching and a strong teaching experience commensurate to the academic seniority level targeted in the application. This includes documented university level competencies in delivering high-quality undergraduate/graduate teaching and ability to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. The candidate is expected to have made substantial contributions to development of teaching materials within the field of neuroanatomy (text books etc.) and to have a track record of teaching and examination in human anatomy. Formal pedagogical training equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training program is required. Finally, candidates are expected to have managerial experience and qualifications.

Required qualifications.

The candidate has:

  • A PhD degree or equivalent.
  • Established an independent line of research.
  • Demonstrated a high record of independent scientific production at an internationally recognized level.
  • Demonstrated sustained attraction of competitive funding over a number of years.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and manage a research group with a sustained production of master-students, PhD-students and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Obtained international experience and recognition.
  • Demonstrated strong involvement in undergraduate and graduate teaching in the field of neuroanatomy.
  • Formal pedagogical training.
  • Demonstrated experience with administrative work at departmental/faculty level.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The basic salary is currently for professors is DKK 52,633 per month (1 April 2020-level)

Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
