An 4-years Assistant Professorship of ‘Life-History Narratives’ is available at the Department of Public Health, University of Copenhagen, starting on 15 August 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Assistant Professor is expected to assist in managing and implementing a research agenda within the Center for Healthy Aging (CEHA), an interdisciplinary research centre headquartered at UCPH and funded by Nordea Fonden. With a focus on researching ageing and ageing processes from cell to society, CEHA’s staff study how people can have healthier lives and age with better health. CEHA’s mission is to employ a common conceptual framework to understand the complex interplay of biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors that influence health and well-being at an individual and a societal level. CEHA actively engages with a variety of stakeholders to develop interventions and policies that promote healthy living and social participation in old age.

We are looking for a candidate to develop a project that focuses on the narratives of older people, particularly within the context of narrative medicine and public-health initiatives for older people. This scholar should be able to analyse and interpret older people’s life histories, and be able to communicate the project’s results and insights to a range of societal stakeholders as well as the general public.

Job description

The Assistant Professor will participate in the interdisciplinary environment within the Department of Public Health, Section of Epidemiology. Their responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Performing research into older people’s narratives and life histories in relation to their practices of health and experiences of ageing
  • Managing the project’s research milestones and deliverables
  • Assisting in implementing a common research strategy
  • Providing guidance and supervision to Master’s students and Ph.D. fellows
  • Teaching interdisciplinary aspects of ageing research with a focus on qualitative methods and cultural analysis
  • Engaging in the University’s internal and external academic activities

Required qualifications

  1. A Ph.D. degree or similar qualifications in cultural analysis (e.g., ethnology or anthropology) with a focus on public-health initiatives targeting older people
  2. In-depth knowledge of ageing studies, cultural gerontology, and qualitative health studies
  3. Experience in conducting qualitative interviews with older people, their relatives, and health professionals
  4. Proven ability to interact and collaborate with societal stakeholders (e.g., municipal officials, healthcare professionals, other research institutions)
  5. Experience in coordinating interdisciplinary research projects
  6. Strong collaborative and communicative skills
  7. Good Danish and English skills

Preferred qualifications

  1. Experience in analysing Danish and international public-health and eldercare policies
  2. Familiarity with quantitative methods and analysis (e.g., register data, regression analysis, systematic reviews)
  3. Experience in project management, publishing, communications, and public outreach
  4. Experience working in interdisciplinary projects

Terms of employment

The appointment is for the duration of the grant, i.e. medio 2024. Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academics at the Universities” of January 2020.
