We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher with experience in clinical and molecular virology for a 3 year postdoc veterinarian position to commence on 1 August 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Background
The Section for Veterinary Clinical Microbiology is within the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH). It has a focus on animal pathogens. The Section carries out research and teaching in the area of serious infectious livestock diseases, including exotic, emerging and zoonotic viral diseases with the focus on key aspects of diagnosis, surveillance and control of these diseases. The research is basic and applied. The Department is part of the Danish Veterinary Consortium (DK-VET) between the UCPH and the Statens Serum Institut (SSI) for the performance of the veterinary public service agreement with the Danish Ministry of Environment and Food (FVST) that is aimed at providing scientific advice to FVST regarding surveillance, prevention and control of serious animal diseases.
African swine fever (ASF) is a serious viral disease of domestic pigs and wild boar. It has, since its introduction into Transcaucasia in 2007, become widespread within Europe and Asia and is a major threat to the pig production industry globally. In order to enhance Danish ASF contingency planning, there is a need to increase knowledge of the virus in its natural host and its transmission. The postdoc project will be focused on investigating ASF virus survival and transmission dynamics in the laboratory and in pigs, respectively. These investigations will provide data on virus survival and transmission that can be applied to modelling of ASF spread. The postdoc is expected to work closely together with other researchers working on ASF (both virologists and epidemiologists) both within the Department at UCPH SUND and at SSI (where new high containment facilities for work with infectious virus will be available). Animal experiments will be performed in facilities abroad.
Profile
We are seeking a postdoc scientist with a strong background in veterinary medicine and virology. The applicant should be highly skilled within the area of in vitro and in vivo characterization of animal viruses.
