Part time Postdoc in Detection of Weak Magnetic Signals generated by Active Neurons at the

Department of Neuroscience

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

University of Copenhagen

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher with interest in Neurophysiology for a 4-year position to start at March 1st 2021 or after agreement.

Background
The position is part of the project “BIO-MAG” funded by the NovoNordisk Fonden challenge programme 2021 “Smart Nanomaterials for Applications in Life Science”. It is a collaboration between the Department of Energy conversion and storage, the Department of Physics of Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) (Professor Nini Pryds; Professor Peter Bøggild; Dr Alexander Huck) and the Department of Neuroscience (IN) of the University of Copenhagen (Dr Jean-François Perrier). The aim of BIO-MAG is to create magnetic sensors capable of subpicotesla sensitivity at room-temperature using two-dimensional (2D) materials with designed quantum properties for the detection of magnetic field produced by active neurons.

Information on the department can be found here: https://in.ku.dk

Our research
The job will be primarily located at the group of Jean-François Perrier (IN). The lab has developed an expertise in in vitro electrophysiology (patch clamp recording in slice preparations). You can find more information about the ongoing projects here: https://in.ku.dk/research/perrier-lab/.

Your job
The specific aim of the current position is to develop original biological preparations that will be used for the detection of magnetitic field generated by evoked action potentials. The DTU teams will develop novel Extraordinary Magnetoresistance (EMR) sensors (See Park et al., 2020: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-17377-0) and color center magnetometers (see Webb et al., 2021: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-81828-x).

Your task will consist in testing the ability of these sensors to detect neuronal activity in slice preparations and eventually in vivo.

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experiences:

Essential experience and skills:

  • You have a PhD in Neuroscience
  • You are highly experienced in in vitro electrophysiology (stimulation, patch-clamp, local field potentials)
  • documented by peer reviewed publications.
  • You are enthusiastic, highly motivated and a self-starter
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • Excellent English skills written and spoken

Desirable experience and skills:

• Experience in optogenetics
• In vivo electrophysiological recordings

Place of employment
The place of employment is at Department of Neuroscience, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories in the new ‘Maersk Tower’, https://maersktower.ku.dk/

Terms of employment
The employment as postdoc is a part time (3 days/ week; i.e. 60%) and fixed-term position for 4 years. Starting date is 1 March 2022, or after agreement.

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Currently, the 60% monthly salary starts at 18,090 DKK/ approx. 2,432 Euro (October 2021-level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of December11, 2019.
