The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

University of Copenhagen

We are seeking a highly skilled bioinformatician to establish and run pipelines and to deliver analytical outputs. The position is for 3 years and to commence April 1, 2020.

About us

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research’s vision is to strengthen interdisciplinary research that transforms our basic understanding of the mechanisms that underlie metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. We were established in 2010 and in 2017 we moved into new laboratories, offices and meeting rooms in the Maersk Tower.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation has financed the Center through two generous grants. The latest, in 2018, has allowed the Center to develop and expand its five enabling biology and technology platforms. The Center has around 200 employees from all over the world who work in a highly collaborative research environment across a range of biomedical disciplines. You can read more about us here: http://cbmr.ku.dk.

Our research

The position will be in the lab group of Professor Romain Barrès, which is part of the GECKO Consortium (Gametic Epigenetics Consortium against Obesity). This consortium, funded by a NNF Challenge Grant, aims to understand the cellular mechanisms by which environmentally-acquired epigenetic information transferred by spermatozoa to offspring can influence their development and predispose them to obesity. The GECKO Consortium is an international group of researchers from the University of Copenhagen, the University of Sydney and the University of Chicago, giving many opportunities for collaboration and insight from a variety of experts.

Your job

We are seeking a skilled and experienced bioinformatician to perform bioinformatic comparative analyses of the responses to nutritional stress across species. In particular, DNA methylation and small non-coding RNA expression in spermatozoa will be assessed using next-generation sequencing. The applicant is expected to work and consult with colleagues concerning issues of data analysis and interpretation. Additionally, the applicant is expected to formulate hypotheses, initiate projects, and manage them through to completion. Candidates with additional background in mathematical modelling, machine learning and molecular biology would be highly regarded.

The assistant professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • research, including publication/academic dissemination duties
  • research-based teaching
  • sharing knowledge with society
  • participation in formal pedagogical training program for assistant professors

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential criteria

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or related field.
  • Very strong experience in programming languages.
  • Experience in next generation sequencing
  • Strong experience with the Linux/UNIX environment, command lines, shell scripting and high-performance computing.
  • Experience in applying statistical and mathematical methods to biological problems.
  • Experience in experimental design and planning of experiments.
  • Demonstrated capacity for effective team work.
  • Postdoctoral experience with proven track record showing scientific productivity in peer reviewed journals.
  • Experience in supervising research staff at different levels.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of epigenetic mechanisms, DNA methylation and small RNA biology.
  • Experience in collecting and processing large-scale scientific data.
  • Experience in analysis of poorly annotated genomes and/or comparative genomic analysis.
  • Knowledge in Git and demonstrated capacity for collaborative programming.
  • Experience in reactive programming.

Place of employment

The place of employment is the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, Maersk Tower, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. We offer stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment

Terms of employment

The employment as assistant professor is a full time and fixed-term position for 3 years. Starting date is April 1, 2020.

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
