The IT University of Copenhagen invites highly motivated individuals to apply for a 3 year PhD position starting in November 2019 or soon thereafter.
The position is part of the research Center for Information Security and Trust (CIST), placed in the Computer Science Department.
The project
Currently, most popular cryptocurrencies and smart contract systems such as Bitcoin and Ethereum offer no privacy guarantees. In practice, this means that all user data on transactions and contract execution is publicly available on the blockchain. The goal of this project is to develop new cryptographic protocols and techniques for privacy preserving blockchain applications, which guarantee that sensitive user data is never revealed. Besides guaranteeing user privacy, we also aim at developing new cryptographic techniques that allow for authorities to lawfully audit user activities in our privacy preserving protocols, which is an Important issue in current privacy preserving blockchain applications.
Towards this goal, we will investigate new techniques for constructing privacy preserving cryptocurrencies and smart contracts that do not leak user data on the blockchain but still allow for public verification of transactions and smart contract executions. While anonymous cryptocurrency systems such as Zcash solve the privacy issues of most current systems, they irrevocably hide all user activities, making it impossible to investigate illegal activities conducted in the system. Aiming at constructing regulation compliant protocols, we will investigate techniques for lawful auditing of user activities in privacy preserving blockchain applications.
The research in this project will focus on employing techniques from the areas of secure multiparty computation, zero knowledge and anonymous credentials to construct privacy preserving yet auditable cryptographic protocols for blockchain applications. More specifically, we will use these techniques to design and analyze provably secure protocols that implement cryptocurrencies with both privacy and auditability guarantees. We will also focus on improving the efficiency of such protocols aiming at practical applications.

- Have a strong background in computer science or mathematics, with a focus on complexity theory, number theory, algebra and probability theory
- Have previous research experience in security and cryptography (specially in cryptographic protocols) is most welcome
- Be motivated and enthusiastic about theoretical research in cryptography
Qualification Requirements
The following qualifications are required:
- 3 year programme: candidates should have an MSc (or equivalent)
- 4 year programme: candidates should have a BSc
