Kongens Lyngby

A PhD position is available in the frame of our industrial collaboration with Novozymes A/S. The focus of the project is the modelling of fermentation processes, where mechanistic, purely data-driven and hybrid approaches are considered to transform process data towards predictions of variables that are relevant in view of achieving an improved process. The project has to be seen in view of the general trend towards digitalization of pilot and full-scale processes.

The candidate working on this PhD project will be based at the Process and Systems Engineering Center (PROSYS) at DTU Chemical Engineering, and will work in close collaboration with the Fermentation Pilot Plant at Novozymes.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The PhD student will develop different types of mathematical models describing fermentation processes (upstream), and will furthermore focus on how to improve treatment system performance based on the model predictions. The tasks will include, but not be limited to

  • Data collection and reconciliation
  • Design of experiments
  • Model construction, mass balance verification
  • Model calibration and validation exercises
  • Scenario analysis with the model
  • Model analysis, e.g. using uncertainty and sensitivity analysis technique

In accordance with the above-mentioned tasks, the applicant should preferably have qualifications within several of the following areas:

  • Experience in mechanistic process modelling
  • Experience with data-driven/statistical models
  • Experience with stochastic modelling approaches
  • Experience with software tools such as Matlab / Simulink or similar (e.g. Python)

Expertise within chemical/biochemical engineering should be documented with the Master/Bachelor thesis and/or relevant publications in international journals.

The project and co-supervision of the PhD student will be in close collaboration with experts from Novozymes fermentation pilot plant. The project will include an external stay, which might be at a university abroad or at one of the Novozymes production sites.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points), preferably in chemical or biochemical engineering, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .
