If you are ambitious and seeking to contribute to laying the foundation for a sustainable future through understanding of chemical and biochemical conversion of bio-sourced substrates, a possibility is right here for you.
A 3-year PhD scholarship is available at the Department of Chemistry, DTU from March 1, 2023 or soon thereafter. The scholarship is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and will be carried out under the supervision of Associate Professor Sebastian Meier in an international environment at DTU Chemistry.
We are interested in the discovery and characterization of dynamic processes in biochemical and chemical systems of relevance to sustainability. We use NMR spectroscopy for serendipitous discoveries and unbiased characterizations of molecules, their conversion, and their interactions in complex systems.
Responsibilities and qualifications
In this project, NMR methods that were developed for medical purposes will be compounded to detect solvent effects on catalyst-substrate interactions, the ensuing conversion pathways, and on their branch points.
Your work will strengthen the ambitions to accelerate the detection of sustainable chemical or biochemical approaches through the development of advanced analytics using state of the art high-field and hyperpolarized NMR spectroscopy.
The aim is to facilitate new processes through rational selection of suitable solvents, based upon their underlying effects on the (bio)chemistry and speed of the transformations.
You will work with nearby colleagues, and with academic partners at the Imperial College in London.
The interdisciplinary nature of the project makes it a prerequisite that you have a broad interest in the application of physical methods for the study of (bio)chemical function.
Your primary tasks will include to:
- develop, evolve, and apply simple NMR methods for the discovery of reactions and pathway chemistry
- apply the methods to the discovery of solvation effects and catalyst functions
- deduce rational design rules for solvent selection in new processes
- contribute to teaching and supervising BSc and MSc student projects
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
You should have a degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, or biophysics. Basic experience with experimental organic chemistry, biotechnology, NMR, statistical metabolomics methods, or data base programming would be an advantage.
You must be able to work independently, but also participate in collaborations, strive toward scientific excellence, be highly motivated, ambitious, and hard-working. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are required.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .
Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professors Sebastian Meier (DTU Chemistry) and Pernille Rose Jensen (DTU Health Technology).
We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment.
