Kongens Lyngby

This position is offered in connection to the project Center for enzymatic deconstruction of thermoset plastics for a sustainable society (En’Zync). The center has just started and will operate for at least six years and is financed by support of the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The center will offer excellent opportunities for further development of your carrier within biotechnology in general and enzyme technology in particular, and it houses leading expertise in the range of disciplines that are required for the discovery and -engineering industrial biocatalysts. Main center activities are within molecular biology, enzymology, structural biology, organic synthesis and computational biochemistry.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your focus will be to identify new enzymes for degradation of thermoset plastics. You will follow two strategies. One will use bioinformatics approaches to identify potential gene candidates. Gene candidates will be inserted into fungal expression platforms based on e.g. Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus oryzae , using high-throughput methods. The resulting enzyme cell factories will be tested for novel activities in relevant assays. The other will screen a large collection systematically for relevant activities. Plastic degrading enzymes will be isolated and genes identified. Next, efficient cell factories will be constructed for enzyme production. The enzymes will be characterized by biochemists within the center and by collaborators. In this process, you will work with nearby colleagues in the center at DTU, in Aarhus and abroad.

Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Carry out bioinformatics analyses
  • Construct fungal strains in a high-throughput cloning platform
  • Implement screening procedures of enzyme discovery
  • Produce novel enzymes
  • Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects

Important qualifications are therefore:

  • Documented use of basic bioinformatics
  • Experience with genetic engineering in fungi
  • Experience with enzyme production

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
